Three days later.

In an upscale villa estate on the outskirts of PE City, YN Province.

A Hummer off-road vehicle passed through the electronic gate of the estate and drove straight into the grounds.

Huang Yu stepped out of the vehicle. This was his first time returning since he had left five months ago. He looked at the familiar manor—the place where he had grown up, his home, and where his parents resided.

Since his parents had taken Peng Min away, Huang Yu had spent three days living alone. He couldn't sleep at night, nor could he focus on his work; his mind was entirely occupied by thoughts of Peng Min. He didn't know when it had started, but he had grown accustomed to her presence, accustomed to the feeling of holding her in his arms as he drifted off to sleep each night. Ever since he learned that Peng Min was pregnant, he hadn't even thought of Li Jia for a long time; it was as if he had completely forgotten her.

He had taken leave from the research institute. Perhaps because there were no new projects pending, his request had been approved without any resistance. Over the past three days, the institute's leadership had noticed Huang Yu’s distracted state and told him not to worry about work, encouraging him to go home and rest, promising to contact him immediately if a new project arose.

Huang Yu had returned to demand a clear answer from his parents: exactly where was Peng Min? He could not endure the thought of waiting until she gave birth to see her again. He could not bear the fact that he could not be by her side during her nine-month pregnancy.

Inside one of the villas, the middle-aged butler approached a room and pushed the door open. This was the study where Huang Tianhua usually worked; it was filled with stacks of books, resembling a small library. Huang Tianhua sat at his desk, reading a document.

"Sir, the security office at the estate gate has reported that the young master has returned and is on his way here," the butler said softly as he walked up to the desk.

"I see. Go and bring him here," Huang Tianhua replied, putting down the document and rubbing his eyes.

"Very well, sir." The butler bowed and quietly retreated from the room.

"So he came after all. Later than I expected; I thought Xiaoyu would have chased after her back then," Huang Tianhua stood up, walked to the window, and looked out at the meticulously maintained landscape, muttering to himself.

That day, at Villa No. 12 in the Longhu villa district, Huang Yu’s attitude toward Peng Min had made it clear to him that she held a place of utmost importance in his son's heart. Huang Tianhua knew his son well; he had watched him grow up. Huang Yu had inherited his mother’s pursuit of emotion and purity of heart, as well as his own intelligence and drive—he had truly inherited the best qualities of both parents. Of course, in his view, a young man being "pure" about romantic relationships wasn't much of a virtue, which was why he had encouraged Huang Yu to pursue Yang Yuqi, even offering to handle the fallout of a one-night stand. Unfortunately, that hadn't happened.

Unlike Huang Tianhua, who had been with many women in his youth, changing partners frequently until he married Du Dan and had Huang Yu, Huang Yu was different. Huang Tianhua loved Du Dan deeply because she had sacrificed so much for him. He also loved Huang Yu, not just because he was talented, but because he was his only son. Other women had carried Huang Tianhua’s children, but he had never allowed any of them to give birth. To those women, he had felt only physical desire, never love.

Footsteps approached, and the door was pushed open. Only two people dared to enter this room without knocking: Du Dan and Huang Yu.

"Tianhua, I heard Xiaoyu is back." Du Dan hurried to his side, breathing slightly heavily from the rush.

"Hmm." Huang Tianhua nodded, his gaze still fixed out the window.

"He must be here because of that woman. What do you intend to do, Tianhua?" Du Dan asked. "In my opinion, we should just get rid of her and be done with it. There are plenty of women in this world who would be happy to bear his children if he wished. He might be upset for a while and ignore us, but once he realizes the truth, he will understand that we did it for his own good." She added, sounding indignant.

She had no fondness for the woman who had gotten her son hooked on drugs, and even if the woman was carrying her grandchild, she still wanted her gone. To her, human life meant nothing compared to the people she cherished. After all, she felt no affection for the child, especially since half of its blood belonged to the woman she despised.

"Your thoughts were my first thoughts as well," Huang Tianhua said slowly. "But because Xiaoyu is our only child, and he is so much like you in his approach to love, we cannot do that."

Du Dan looked at him in confusion.

"Back then, to be with me, you rejected the arranged marriage your family had set up, even threatened to take your own life, and eventually eloped with me. You haven't stepped foot back in your home for all these years." Huang Tianhua wore a faint smile as he recalled the past.

It was that very event that had caused Du Dan to suffer a chronic illness, leaving her unable to conceive again after giving birth to Huang Yu.

"How can that woman compare to you?" Du Dan asked. "And are you trying to pin the blame for this on me? You’ve been dissatisfied with how much I coddle and protect Huang Yu all these years, haven't you?"

"I only said the boy is like you; I didn't say that was a bad thing." Huang Tianhua gently took his wife's hand.

"Then what do you mean?"

"I mean that because he is so much like you in matters of the heart, we cannot simply eliminate Peng Min. Even if we dislike her, we cannot act rashly. Dan, put yourself in his shoes: Peng Min is to him what I am to you. If someone had killed me, what would you have done?"

"I really don't know what kind of spell that woman cast on my son," Du Dan muttered after a long silence.

*Dan, I imagine your elders thought the same of me all those years ago—that I had cast a spell on you,* Huang Tianhua thought to himself with a sigh.

Because of Peng Min’s pregnancy and Huang Yu’s attitude, Huang Tianhua had spent the last three days thinking. He wasn't as repulsed by Peng Min as he had been at first. However, he knew his wife’s temperament and felt he had to stand by her. Huang Tianhua didn't care much about who his son dated, whether he married, or even his drug addiction. He loved Huang Yu and left Peng Min alone only because he loved Du Dan. He would support Huang Yu in whatever he did because he was Du Dan’s only child.

He heard Du Dan’s mutterings but said nothing, only patting her hand to signal her to stay calm, that he would handle it.

Just then, the door was pushed open gently. The middle-aged butler entered, followed by Huang Yu. Huang Tianhua and Du Dan turned to look. The butler led Huang Yu to them, caught a nod from Huang Tianhua, bowed, and retreated, closing the door softly behind him.

"This is the first time you’ve come straight here to see me upon returning," Huang Tianhua said, a faint smile on his face. He remembered that every time Huang Yu returned home, his first stop was always his mother, followed by his own room to read, exercise, or play the piano. He had never come to see his father first.

"You're finally here," Huang Tianhua said.
