Chapter 044: The Broad Blue Glow
Chapter 044: The Carefree Lanyou
Splash—
A wave of water surged up.
Chu Fei emerged from beneath the surface, cradling the unconscious Lanyou in his arms...
Fortunately, there was a river at the bottom of the cliff; otherwise, when the Hummer fell, even if Chu Fei had survived by sheer luck, Lanyou would certainly have met her death from the fall...
Even so, Lanyou had fainted. In fact, she had lost consciousness when the truck collided with the Hummer. Perhaps it was a blessing she fainted, for it would have been even more troublesome otherwise...
Chu Fei reached the riverbank, and just then, a deafening blast erupted behind him—
Boom—
The Hummer’s fuel tank finally exploded, flames rising, turning the surface of the river into a sea of fire...
Glancing back at the raging blaze burning atop the water, Chu Fei felt a lingering dread. Without a second thought, he carried Lanyou away from the river, heading for the nearby woods. He plunged into the trees without hesitation; now was no time to worry about the killers above. His greatest concern was Lanyou...
Though he had tried his utmost to shield the girl from harm, the peril they’d just escaped made him uncertain. He needed a quiet place to check her over carefully...
—
Lanyou felt as if she were dreaming. In her dream, she’d been struck and thrown off a cliff, nearly dying from the fall, and then... nothing. She lost all sensation; it seemed her head had been struck, leaving her in a freezing cellar, shivering from the cold—so cold...
Hoo—
Suddenly, Lanyou opened her eyes and saw the world around her, black and silent.
Was this hell?
She blinked, scanning her surroundings as her heart raced, but soon she felt reassured. Though hell was shrouded in darkness, it didn’t seem so terrifying after all.
“Awake?”
A gentle voice sounded at her ear.
“Ah—!”
Lanyou cried out in fright, but her voice stopped abruptly as her sight fell upon a handsome face. Not that her vision was especially keen, but the face was very close—less than half a foot away—gazing at her with worry...
“Master?” Lanyou blinked, immediately recognizing him, and asked instinctively, “Did you die too?”
Cough, cough—
Chu Fei nearly choked on his own saliva, utterly unprepared for her first words upon waking.
Did this girl really think she was dead?
Chu Fei chuckled inwardly, and nodded, “What do you think?”
“Haha—”
Lanyou laughed at his reply.
“What’s so funny?” Chu Fei asked, perplexed.
“Nothing, really. I was a little scared, being alone in the dark, but since you’re here, I’m not afraid anymore. You’ll protect me, won’t you?” Lanyou replied cheerfully.
“I don’t have the energy to protect you.” Chu Fei was speechless at her words; this girl was truly carefree.
“How can that be? You’re a man, aren’t you? Isn’t it natural for men to protect women?” Lanyou wondered aloud.
“I only protect my own woman; you’re not mine,” Chu Fei said calmly. Lanyou’s thoughts were exceedingly erratic, but seeing that she was unharmed finally eased his heart.
“Really?” Lanyou’s eyes widened.
Chu Fei didn’t bother answering, instead asking, “Aren’t you afraid?”
“Afraid of what?” Lanyou asked, puzzled.
“Forget it,” Chu Fei sighed. Lanyou’s mind was truly on another level...
“Ah!”
Suddenly, Lanyou cried out in alarm.
“What’s wrong?” Chu Fei jumped, alertly glancing toward the river...
“Where are my clothes?” Lanyou looked anxiously at him, realizing she was held tightly in Chu Fei’s arms, which explained why his face had been so close...
“Your clothes were soaked. I took them off and left them over there,” Chu Fei replied.
“But aren’t we dead? How could our clothes get wet if we’re dead?” Lanyou turned and saw her wet clothes on the ground, muttering in confusion. Then, with a sudden yelp, she nearly startled Chu Fei into falling over.
“You—?”
“Ha ha, Master, so I’m not dead after all! I knew it—how could I, Lanyou, with my great fortune, die so easily just after finding such a cool and handsome master? Ha ha, I was so scared just now, thought I was really gone!” Lanyou beamed with excitement.
“Weren’t you just completely unafraid of dying?” Chu Fei stared at the girl acting like a lunatic.
“I’m not afraid, but I don’t want to die yet. Besides, I’ve just met you—such a handsome guy, and I haven’t even had a chance to flirt with you!” Lanyou’s words were as bold as ever.
Chu Fei broke out in a cold sweat. Was she really planning to flirt with him?
“But, Master, how could you take off my clothes without my permission?” Lanyou suddenly recalled her predicament, eyeing Chu Fei suspiciously.
“Look carefully; you’re not naked,” Chu Fei replied, exasperated.
“Only my underwear’s left—is there a difference?” Lanyou pouted, blinking twice before asking, “Master, did you take advantage of me when you took off my clothes? Did you touch me inappropriately...?”
Chu Fei’s forehead was covered in sweat. He glared at her, “I have no interest in your skinny frame.”
“Master, those words are too hurtful! I admit my chest is small, but my face and figure are still pretty good! I...” Lanyou protested in a coquettish tone.
“If you say ‘I’ in that coy way one more time, I’ll leave you here and not care anymore,” Chu Fei threatened through gritted teeth. The brat who usually spoke like a tough girl now suddenly acted sweet and innocent—it was unbearable.
Lanyou obediently fell silent, curling up like a little kitten in Chu Fei’s arms.
Chu Fei said nothing more, and a quiet, stifling silence filled the air.
“Master, how long are you planning to hold me?” Lanyou suddenly asked, looking up at him.
“If you’re not cold, I’ll let go now,” Chu Fei replied, frowning.
“No, I’m freezing! Hold me tighter,” Lanyou quickly shook her head and even hugged Chu Fei’s arm, as if afraid he’d cast her aside...
Chu Fei glanced at her and explained what had happened... Lanyou had a right to know.
“Damn, who drives so carelessly? If I find out, I’ll slaughter them!” Lanyou cursed, teeth clenched.
“It was likely intentional,” Chu Fei said calmly, recalling the two glaring headlights. If it was coincidence, he’d never believe it.
“You mean they’re killers?” Lanyou’s face turned pale.
“Not certain, but highly possible,” Chu Fei nodded, suddenly looking toward the distance, speaking softly, “Someone’s coming.”
Lanyou immediately fell silent in terror...
—
Above the cliff, two ropes dangled, along which two figures descended nimbly like wildcats...
“Liu Shao is really overly cautious. The explosion just now was so intense, anyone would have been blown to pieces. How could anyone survive?”
The one on the left grumbled upon reaching the ground, clearly dissatisfied.
“Quiet, Liu Shao prefers caution. Didn’t Wei say the target is a master of internal energy?” The figure on the right replied.
“So what if he’s a master? With an explosion like that, I don’t believe he could survive,” the left one muttered.
“No harm in being cautious—wait, what the hell, there’s a river here...” The right figure stopped abruptly, staring at the burning water, his expression sour...
The left man’s face also grew grave; neither had anticipated the presence of a river—an unpredictable variable...
“Go check if there’s a body in there,” the right one ordered.
The left man strode toward the water without hesitation...
“No need to look. I’m right here.”
A cold voice suddenly sounded behind them...
Swish—
Both men turned at once, seeing a handsome young man standing two meters away, holding a disheveled girl in his arms...
“Damn—”
Both men reacted instantly—one drawing a dagger reflexively, the other pulling out a cylindrical object, likely a signal flare...
But Chu Fei was much faster than either of them.
Bang bang—
Two dull thuds.
Both men collapsed, their weapons falling to the side, their eyes filled with terror as they looked at Chu Fei...
Too fast—so fast they’d had no time to react.
At that moment, they recalled Wei’s warning: The enemy is an internal energy master...
Was this the terrifying power of such a master?
“Tell me, the Liu Shao you mentioned—is it Liu Fengkai?” Chu Fei stood before the left man, his voice cold.
“Hey, you—” The man sneered, about to speak arrogantly, but his words were cut short as Chu Fei kicked him in the back of the head, knocking him out. The kick wasn’t hard, but his internal energy shattered the man’s brain nerves...
The bloodthirsty youth known as Blood Fox had it wrong—Chu Fei was never merciful. He only endured to avoid unnecessary trouble.
But if someone sought death, he never minded sending them to hell. Just as now, he didn’t kill, but his kick had turned the man into an idiot.
“I—I’ll talk, I’ll talk—”
Watching his companion twitching, foaming at the mouth, the right man panicked, blurting out his words, terrified Chu Fei might kick him next...
“Sorry, I don’t need to know.”
Chu Fei walked past the man, casually kicking him into idiocy as well. He’d only asked out of curiosity; he never cared for the answer...
Standing beneath the ropes, Chu Fei looked up, his eyes flashing cold light...
Liu Fengkai?
You’re courting death!
