Chapter 114: So Easy
“Then I’ll tell you.” The man in black produced two sheets of paper and handed them to the two, saying, “These are clearance certificates. With these, you can leave along with these three survivors. Congratulations—you’ve found the correct way out.”
Xie Yan took the papers from the man in black, somewhat stunned. He hadn’t expected things to be this simple.
Is that all? Just like that? Just… guess right and they hand you the clearance certificates? Could it really be so easy?
Countless questions swirled in Xie Yan’s mind at that moment, but the man in black gave no time for inquiry. After handing the certificates to Xie Yan and Lin Shuang, he simply left.
Looking at the certificates in her hands, Lin Shuang quietly put them away and then asked Xie Yan, “Shall we try?”
“Sure. Let’s wait until those two come down and then ask.”
“Kill them. Taking Bai Xingchen with us will be more than enough,” Lin Shuang suddenly said.
Lin Shuang’s words startled Xie Yan, but recalling what those two men had done to her, he understood. If he were in her place, he would do the same.
“Alright.” Xie Yan nodded.
Seeing that Xie Yan did not object, Lin Shuang was a little surprised. After all, she was about to kill these two men, uncertain whether it might affect their chance to leave.
Yet Xie Yan didn’t even ask why she wanted to kill them—he simply agreed. Lin Shuang wasn’t sure if this was trust or foolishness on his part.
But thinking it over, Lin Shuang recognized from their journey that Xie Yan’s intellect might not be extraordinarily high, but his perception was keen.
“Then I’ll make the move.” Lin Shuang smiled.
Xie Yan nodded, and Lin Shuang drew her bow, shooting an arrow at the ropes binding the two men.
The ropes snapped with a clean shot. The men, already dizzy from the binds, died without any pain.
With that settled, Xie Yan and Lin Shuang, carrying the unconscious Bai Xingchen and the two clearance certificates, headed toward the exit.
But things rarely go so smoothly.
At the exit, Xie Yan spotted a familiar figure—Lin Ye.
Lin Ye stood at the exit, seemingly having waited a long time. When he saw Xie Yan approach, he smiled and said, “You work fast.”
“You knew I would come here?” Xie Yan asked.
“Yes. I know you can leave. Actually, the three checkpoints here aren’t fully developed yet. I’m looking for issues and hope you can help me improve them. What do you say?”
Xie Yan was truly surprised by this invitation. The three areas did feel strange, though he couldn’t quite pinpoint why—now he understood it was because they were incomplete.
“Why would you want me to help? And… what exactly are these three zones for?” Xie Yan pressed.
But Lin Ye wasn’t prepared to explain. He merely shook his head lightly, then turned to look beyond the exit, his back to Xie Yan. “Do you know the main city?”
“Hmm…”
“Never mind. It’s no use telling you all this now.” Lin Ye stopped after one question, then turned back, smiling warmly at Xie Yan.
Xie Yan couldn’t make sense of why Lin Ye suddenly mentioned the main city and then stopped.
“You want to leave, right? Go ahead. But think carefully about what I just said. You can help me improve this place.” With that, Lin Ye stepped aside, making way for Xie Yan to leave.
Xie Yan and Lin Shuang thanked Lin Ye and left without hesitation. Yet, just as they stepped out, Lin Ye called out again.
He walked up to Xie Yan, glanced at Bai Xingchen slung on Lin Shuang’s back, and said, “Can I have this person?”
“What does Mr. Lin want her for?” Lin Shuang straightened up, dropped Bai Xingchen roughly to the ground, and brushed off her clothes as if Bai Xingchen were some filthy thing.
Lin Ye smiled and answered, “It’s not that I want anything from her. I’m just worried you’ll get into trouble. It’d be a big problem having her with you.”
Xie Yan said to Lin Shuang, “Since Mr. Lin says so, let’s hand her over. She’s a burden to us anyway.”
Lin Shuang nodded. “Naturally. It’s troublesome having this woman with us. Thank you, Mr. Lin.”
Lin Ye nodded and smiled as he saw them off.
After Xie Yan and Lin Shuang left, a man suddenly emerged from behind Lin Ye. If Xie Yan and Lin Shuang had stayed, they would surely have recognized him.
“Kra, what do you want with this woman? Do you really like that kind of person?” Lin Ye said without turning around.
“Mr. Lin, don’t mock me. How could I like someone like her? But she is very useful—because she’s the one Lady Isabel wants,” Kra replied.
“Why would Lady Isabel want this woman?” Lin Ye looked at Kra in confusion.
Kra just smiled, refusing to reveal the reason.
“It’s getting late. I’ll take this woman and leave. Thanks, Mr. Lin.” Kra turned to leave, but Lin Ye was not like Xie Yan; he wouldn’t give up so easily.
Lin Ye reached out to stop Kra, tilting his head with a puzzled, teasing smile. “What? You still have business with me?”
“Answer my question—why does Lady Isabel want this woman?”
Lin Ye’s abilities were not far behind Lady Isabel’s, and his position in the main city was only slightly lower. He had every ability to inquire about Lady Isabel’s intentions.
He didn’t believe Lady Isabel wanted the woman out of affection, nor that Kra simply brought her for that reason.
Seeing Lin Ye’s stubbornness, Kra rubbed his temple and sighed. “I knew it. You won’t let this go without an answer.”
“Since you insist, I might as well tell you. Lady Isabel is collecting materials for experiments, and this woman is an excellent specimen. I intend to report this to Lady Isabel and earn credit—that’s all.”
Kra’s explanation was standard and gave Lin Ye no clues, so he had no choice but to stop questioning.
Lin Ye released his hand and stepped aside. Kra left gracefully.
“Kra’s truly a strange man…” Lin Ye murmured softly, then turned and vanished into the swing area.
