Chapter 94: Don't Jinx It
At the first-floor rear entrance of Research Institute 1215, Yun Xuan could see the zombies outside through the surveillance cameras. Their faces were hideous, making one afraid to look directly.
“Good thing I have the time freeze during Battle Moment,” Yun Xuan said as he summoned White Snow.
“Battle Moment,” White Snow murmured softly.
The zombies outside came to a halt, and all was silent. Seizing the chance, Yun Xuan sprinted straight to the door leading down to the second underground floor.
He opened it and rushed inside. As soon as he reached the stairwell, he saw the Violet Light fighter craft.
Yun Xuan stored the Violet Light fighter craft into his space backpack and, without the slightest hesitation, turned back. As he passed all the zombies, the pistol in his hand was already aimed at their heads.
When only thirty seconds remained, Yun Xuan returned to the door on the first floor and shut it behind him.
A rapid series of muffled cracks rang out as bullets slammed into flesh.
“Congratulations, Host, on completing Main Quest One. Reward: 100 exchange points.”
“Main Quest Two: kill ten strange beasts. Reward: 1000 exchange points. Completing it will trigger the follow-up quest.”
“Ten strange beasts?” Yun Xuan muttered as he climbed the stairs.
……
An hour later.
Yun Xuan was browsing the marketplace of the survivor enclave, listing many things he needed to buy.
The fact that he was living in Research Institute 1215 absolutely could not be known by the other survivors.
So the exchange could only be made in the survivor enclave, ten kilometers away.
“People may be watching this area too. I have to make sure I have two time freezes available to get out of here, and use time freeze to move as close to the survivor enclave as possible. After the trade is done, I’ll return, and I’ll need to keep one time freeze in reserve,” Yun Xuan thought. He had no intention of becoming a turtle trapped in a jar.
After browsing the situation in the survivor enclave a little longer, Yun Xuan began experimenting with his artificial warrior plan.
Although Violet was a mid-level intelligence, it was not especially powerful. Yun Xuan controlled the basic intelligent phone, and therefore he was its master.
A mid-level intelligence would absolutely obey the commands of its human creator. Unless it evolved one day into a high-level intelligence, it could never possess true human feelings.
As for betrayal, that was even more impossible to speak of. As long as Yun Xuan did not do something stupid like giving the basic intelligent phone to someone else, there would be no problem.
……
Eight o’clock at night.
Yun Xuan ate canned food and steamed buns, and felt that they were pretty good; the taste was excellent.
White Snow and Ice Snow had spent the entire afternoon peeling the labels off more than ten thousand cans. Yun Xuan had only remembered it at noon when he was eating canned food.
If those people saw the manufacturer and production date, they would surely be frightened half to death.
“Pull up all anime from 2000 to 2020, create a document, and save their light novel and manga versions,” Yun Xuan said to Violet.
“Yes,” Violet began searching. It was easy to create the document, and in less than a minute, it was done.
“Also pull up the games, fan works, and anime from the Battleship Maiden series,” Yun Xuan said, remembering that he still needed to make games.
Violet followed Yun Xuan’s command and even brought up a game that required a virtual helmet to play.
“Virtual helmet technology, huh?” Yun Xuan had no intention of taking it back with him. It was enough to develop the world of anime and games. At the pace things were moving over there, virtual helmets would probably appear in a few decades anyway.
After putting all the data onto a USB drive, Yun Xuan watched anime and slowly drifted off to sleep.
White Snow and Ice Snow were still staring at each other, their expressions unchanged.
……
The next morning.
Yun Xuan washed up with purified water from the institute, then ate bread and drank milk.
After he finished eating and drinking, Yun Xuan took White Snow to the first floor.
“Battle Moment,” White Snow murmured.
Yun Xuan opened the door at once, brought out the motorcycle, and after White Snow closed the door, she sat in the back.
With a whoosh, the motorcycle shot out of the basement, and Yun Xuan drove along the route he had planned the night before.
Roadblocks were naturally unavoidable on the way, but White Snow split every single one apart with a single slash.
In four minutes, the two of them advanced four kilometers.
Yun Xuan put away the motorcycle. The novice sword and the freezing gun appeared in his hands, and he led White Snow toward the survivor enclave.
Under the daylight sun, the zombies moved somewhat sluggishly, so Yun Xuan could walk along the streets. But strange beasts and evolved zombies were not afraid of that.
……
Rat-a-tat-tat.
The sound of machine-gun fire rang out.
Yun Xuan looked toward the back of the buildings on the left and paused slightly. Was this a hunt?
As he and White Snow moved closer to take a look, they saw a group of obese zombies, each nearly two meters tall, being swept by machine-gun fire, along with many ordinary zombies.
The hunters were dressed in military uniforms. They were soldiers from the survivor enclave, generally responsible for protecting the enclave and supplying the scientists with test subjects.
“In the apocalypse, daring to walk around as just the two of you, you must be ability users,” said a young man in a trench coat as he walked over.
“Can we catch a ride? We want to go to the survivor enclave,” Yun Xuan said.
“Of course, as long as you offer enough benefits,” the young man replied with a smile.
Yun Xuan took something from inside his coat and tossed it to the young man.
“Not bad, not bad. Come with me,” the young man said with brightened eyes after seeing what it was.
Yun Xuan remained wary in his heart. These soldiers maintained order in the survivor enclave and would not fight over candy. As long as they were given enough benefit, a ride could be arranged.
The two of them followed the young man to the other soldiers. Yun Xuan looked at three modified trucks, and there were already ten ordinary people aboard them.
All of them looked pale, as though they had gone hungry for a very long time, or else they wore expressions of deep fear.
“You can sit in the front passenger seat with her. I’m the captain of this squad, Ye Shan,” the young man said with a smile.
“Thank you.” Yun Xuan nodded and took White Snow to the front passenger seat.
The passenger seat in this kind of transport vehicle could fit three people, and if necessary, even five could squeeze in.
What Yun Xuan had given the young man was candy. Although it was not especially valuable, it was something rare, and for Ye Shan, that was a benefit all the same.
As for the people on the military trucks, they were probably those who had been given no food and, after entering the survivor enclave, would have to work to repay their debt to the enclave.
Ability users were rare to begin with, and Ye Shan was one himself. He could tell that Yun Xuan was very strong.
Through the rearview mirror, Yun Xuan watched as they loaded the experimental subjects. From the brains of the two-meter-tall zombies, they extracted crystal stones the size of glass beads.
That was a crystal core.
Ability users grew by devouring crystal cores, and their powers reflected their specialties.
Yun Xuan’s specialty was strength, yet he also possessed a sensory ability, allowing him to evade danger.
“Withdraw!” Ye Shan ordered. The test subjects were loaded onto the trucks and taken away. The rest got aboard as well, while the rear guard kept firing even as they climbed in.
“Today’s harvest is pretty good. Last week we ran into a strange beast and nearly lost more than half our men. I hope we don’t run into one again this time,” Ye Shan said to Yun Xuan from the driver’s seat.
“Do you know what a jinx is?” Yun Xuan said indifferently.
“Hahaha, I’m an extremely lucky man,” Ye Shan said, driving as the three vehicles charged out of the alley and onto the street.
“ROOOAR!”
A beastly howl thundered out. Yun Xuan looked at the collapsed building not far away and twitched at the corner of his mouth. What a crow’s mouth.
Ye Shan opened his mouth, his expression grave.
