Chapter 66: What a Terrible Game
Night had fallen on the city streets.
“Wen Xuan’er?” Yun Xuan pondered Liu Mengyan’s answer; the person closest to the front door was Wen Xuan’er.
By tracking Wen Xuan’er’s phone, Yun Xuan arrived at a rented apartment. It was a residential house not far from Xuanxue Restaurant, old and worn, and Yun Xuan could hear the voices of several middle-aged men inside.
With a bang, Yun Xuan kicked open the loosely shut wooden door and entered the house.
The four men inside jumped in shock.
“No one?” Yun Xuan glanced at the phone’s signal display. It was definitely this location.
“Where is the owner of the phone you’re holding?” Yun Xuan looked at the four men.
“This... this is it. The four of us are here for work. A young lady drove by just now and handed us her phone,” said the plainly dressed middle-aged man, handing Yun Xuan a white phone.
“Sorry to trouble you. Here’s compensation for the repairs.” Yun Xuan took the phone, bowed, left a thousand yuan, and walked out.
“Huh?” The man stared at the thousand yuan in his hand, a little dazed.
“Brother Yuan, let’s split the money among us,” the thinner man said happily.
“No, repairing the door will cost much less. Besides, we took someone’s phone; the girl must be anxious to find someone. She was wearing a chef’s uniform, probably from a nearby place. Tomorrow I’ll look around and return the money,” the plain man shook his head.
“Brother Yuan, you’re too honest,” the thin man muttered, saying no more.
The four, led by Brother Yuan, had come to the city for work. Brother Yuan was diligent, never bullied his own people, and was a good leader; they all respected him.
Naturally, after hearing his words, they said nothing more. A person should live with a clear conscience.
…
With Wen Xuan’er’s phone in hand, Yun Xuan immediately locked onto his next target—Liu Mengxuan!
Thinking carefully, Liu Mengyan had warned him to stay away from Liu Mengxuan.
“So that’s it. How could such a perfect person exist in this world? No wonder I found it strange.” Yun Xuan tapped on his super notebook, connecting all the dots. His suspicions from the afternoon were correct; Liu Mengxuan was indeed hiding something.
“Liu Mengxuan’s location, Nangong Xiaomeng’s location, Yun Xue’s location.” Yun Xuan marked the remaining three phones and found a route.
“Liu Pharmaceutical?” Yun Xuan paused, then put away the super notebook and ran toward Liu Pharmaceutical.
He moved swiftly, putting the notebook into his spatial backpack. He resolved to buy a motorcycle for emergencies next time.
Half an hour later.
Yun Xuan gazed at the lit windows atop Liu Pharmaceutical. The building was silent, with fully sealed doors. No outsider could possibly enter.
Yun Xuan crouched in a corner, hacked into Liu Pharmaceutical’s system, altered permissions, opened a backdoor, and disabled all surveillance recording.
“Liu Mengxuan, if you dare harm Yun Xue and the others, I won’t let you off.” Yun Xuan clenched his fist, eyeing the empty car—likely Liu Mengxuan’s.
He entered through the back door, looked at the elevator, hesitated, then rode it up one floor.
“Ding.” The elevator doors opened. Yun Xuan, holding a tranquilizer gun, crept cautiously up the stairs to the top floor.
He saw the brightly lit laboratory, three girls on the experiment table, and Liu Mengxuan in a white coat beside them. Yun Xuan fought the urge to draw his guns, aiming instead at Liu Mengxuan.
A soft pop.
Liu Mengxuan’s body stiffened and she collapsed to the floor in disbelief.
Yun Xuan entered the lab, untied the ropes binding Yun Xue and the other two, and tied Liu Mengxuan to a chair.
“What’s this…” Yun Xuan looked at a stack of documents and a box of injectors.
He picked up the documents, eyes wide—how could this be?
The title read: Dormant Future Project.
The research aimed to induce human dormancy, suppress growth, then place subjects in nutrient tanks to extend life.
If successful, it could allow people to acquire vast knowledge during dormancy, enabling mass cultivation of talent.
“A failed project. The Liu family is truly mad. Is this Liu Mengxuan’s plan?” Yun Xuan’s face was grim as he eyed the empty box of three injectors.
Even if he started researching now, five or ten years might not suffice. These were Liu Pharmaceutical’s only three dormancy drugs, and the experimental data noted as completely deleted on the last page.
They knew well: if such research was discovered, Liu Pharmaceutical would be doomed.
…
A basin of cold water was poured onto Liu Mengxuan’s face.
“Pfft… cough, cough.” Liu Mengxuan opened her eyes, staring at the person before her.
“Liu Mengxuan, tell me—why?” Yun Xuan said quietly.
“Yun Xuan?!” Liu Mengxuan exclaimed in terror.
“Answer me. Why did you harm them?” Yun Xuan stared intently.
“Why? Of course it’s for revenge. Do you know how painful it is to have an exceptional sister? She always stood above me. I was sent to Japan for so-called elite education. Ten years—my parents never visited, except for phone calls! If not for my master’s shelter, I might not even have freedom.” Liu Mengxuan sneered.
“What does that have to do with Yun Xue?” Yun Xuan pressed.
“She’s the master’s daughter. Though lost for years, data from the orphanage and DNA tests confirmed her identity.” Liu Mengxuan glanced at Yun Xuan in surprise—he was still calm?
“So, to keep your master’s trust, you turned her daughter into a vegetable, exposed Liu Pharmaceutical’s research, and with the Nangong family’s princess also in a coma, the Liu family would be utterly destroyed.” Yun Xuan spoke coolly, pulling out a cigarette and lighting up.
His hand trembled slightly.
Another unsolvable dilemma.
Unable to save Yun Xue, Nangong Xiaomeng, or Wen Xuan’er. Unable to kill Liu Mengxuan. Unable to let her go.
“How can you be so calm? I made them like this—aren’t you angry?” Liu Mengxuan looked at Yun Xuan in confusion.
“Is anger useful? Liu Mengxuan, answer one thing honestly.” Yun Xuan tossed away the cigarette, serious.
“Ask, unless it’s something hard,” Liu Mengxuan showed no fear.
“Do you hate Liu Mengyan? Have you considered what will happen to her if you destroy the Liu family?” Yun Xuan spoke word by word.
Liu Mengxuan was silent. She hated the Liu family, but not Liu Mengyan.
Even if Liu Mengyan disliked her, she still loved her—yes, love. She wanted to destroy every obstacle around Liu Mengyan, to be with her. That was her small wish.
“Thank you. Your silence is my answer. Liu Mengxuan, I will save you, and make everything perfect.” Yun Xuan walked toward the door.
“What are you going to do?” Liu Mengxuan’s heart skipped.
“To meet the Angel.” Yun Xuan turned back with a faint smile, stepped away from the glass.
“You lunatic, stop! There’s still a chance for them to recover. I don’t want to hurt anyone!” Liu Mengxuan shouted.
“You truly are kind, but it’s no longer necessary.” Yun Xuan smiled at her, face streaked with tears.
He feared death; no one could face it calmly, especially this kind.
“Angel, sorry to trouble you again.” Yun Xuan gritted his teeth and rushed out of the building.
“Yun Xuan!” Liu Mengxuan cried out, but it was too late.
Crash—the glass shattered and Yun Xuan’s body plummeted.
“What a lousy game,” Yun Xuan murmured as he looked at the night sky, wiping away tears.
(PS: I’m not vilifying Liu Mengxuan; she’s just a pitiable girl. Next chapter, guess where the save point is? Please recommend the story!)
