Chapter 127: The Trial Ends
“This boy is rather strange!”
It was not only Wang Da; even Zhu He narrowed his pupils and took another look at Lin Fan.
With a smile at the corners of his mouth, Lin Fan extended his palm and beckoned to the two of them. “Come on. Both of you attack together!”
“You dare look down on me?!”
A flash of fury crossed Wang Da’s eyes. He stamped his foot against the ground. With a booming crack, the earth burst open, leaving a deep crater, and his entire body shot toward Lin Fan. A violent aura gathered around his fist as he smashed it toward Lin Fan.
After Lin Fan had sent him flying with a single motion, Wang Da naturally had no intention of holding back any longer. It would be humiliating to suffer a defeat through carelessness.
“You’re no match for me on your own!”
Lin Fan declared this with complete certainty. Without dodging in the slightest, he clenched his five fingers into a fist and met Wang Da head-on.
With a thunderous explosion, Lin Fan remained utterly motionless. Wang Da, however, was sent flying backward, blood seeping from the corner of his mouth.
“Attack together!”
Wang Da landed with a backward somersault, stamped against the ground once more, and charged at Lin Fan with even greater ferocity. At the same time, he shouted loudly to Zhu He.
After that exchange, he already knew that he was inferior to Lin Fan. Since they were competing for points, he would not knowingly insist on fighting alone when he could not win.
“Fine!”
Zhu He nodded. In the next instant, he moved as well. His palms flashed through the air, and countless enormous hand seals condensed from true essence thundered toward Lin Fan.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
In the distance, Xiao Beihan and Long Ya were still locked in combat. Long Ya had already opened more than fifty acupoints, and the injuries suffered by both men were growing increasingly severe.
Nearby, Lin Fan battled Wang Da and Zhu He. He fought with effortless ease, never yielding the slightest advantage. Like a man strolling through his own courtyard, he dissolved all their attacks and repeatedly drove them back with counterstrikes.
Of course, Lin Fan was not using his full strength. He was merely holding the two of them at bay. If he unleashed everything he had, a single strike would be enough to inflict serious injuries on them both.
“He’s actually this powerful?!”
Long Xinlan was so shocked that she could hardly speak. Even with Wang Da and Zhu He joining forces, they were still unable to defeat Lin Fan.
“Take their points and leave some for this little girl. I’ll go help Wang Da and Zhu He!”
Long Xinlan quickly recovered and shouted to the group of martial artists in the later or peak stages of the Qi Vein Realm in the distance. She moved at once, preparing to attack Lin Fan.
Suddenly, someone tugged at the hem of her clothes. She lowered her head and saw that it was the adorable little girl in red.
“Fall down,” the little girl in red said to her.
Then she turned toward her companions in the Qi Vein Realm and said, “You fall down too.”
“What?!”
Long Xinlan was confused. She had no idea what the little girl meant. But in the next instant, her expression changed dramatically, for a feeling of weakness swept over her from head to toe.
Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud!
Sounds of bodies hitting the ground came from the distance. One by one, her companions collapsed. Long Xinlan’s entire body went limp, and she fell as well.
Thud! Thud!
In the distance, Wang Da and Zhu He, who had been fighting Lin Fan, also collapsed to the ground...

One month later, Lin Fan stood in the square of the Heavenly Book Academy with Xiao Beihan and the others, while Long Ya and his companions stood beside them.
After a month of eliminations, the trial had finally ended. The five thousand students standing in the square would officially become students of the Heavenly Book Academy.
A month earlier, the girl in red had used a newly prepared knockout drug to bring down Long Xinlan and the others, then quietly waited for the battle between Xiao Beihan and Long Ya to end.
The battle between Xiao Beihan and Long Ya had been exceptionally fierce. In the end, Long Ya lost, but Xiao Beihan suffered the more serious injuries. Long Ya had repeatedly increased his strength under the pressure Xiao Beihan placed upon him, and the burden on Xiao Beihan had grown heavier and heavier.
It was only when Long Ya let out a furious roar and punched Xiao Beihan flying that the battle finally came to an end.
Afterward, Long Ya naturally exposed Xiao Beihan’s identity as Long Xinlan’s fiancé. This made Long Xinlan blush for a long time. She had tried to rob her own fiancé, and on top of that, she felt that her behavior had been rather unladylike. Whether or not she liked Xiao Beihan, the whole situation was deeply embarrassing.
It was like losing one’s temper at a stranger, only to discover in the end that he was actually a long-lost older or younger brother. Anyone would immediately feel ashamed.
Long Ya and the others decided not to leave either. Their points were more than sufficient to enter the Heavenly Book Academy, and anyone who challenged them was destined to be eliminated.
Of course, the main reason was Long Ya’s own decision. He wanted to give his sister time to develop a relationship with Xiao Beihan.
In the days that followed, Lin Fan continually instructed Xiao Beihan and the others in martial techniques. At first, Long Ya and the others paid little attention, but later they began asking Lin Fan for guidance every few days, just like the students.
By the time the trial was nearly over, Long Ya had practically become Lin Fan’s disciple. He worshiped Lin Fan even more than Xiao Beihan and the others did.
Under Lin Fan’s instruction, the martial technique that had nearly reached the minor mastery stage advanced all the way to the peak of major mastery. Relying on that technique, Long Ya brutally overwhelmed Xiao Beihan despite being in the same realm, and the victory left him immensely satisfied.
Amid the anticipation of more than five thousand students, a group of teachers soon appeared on the elevated platform. The most conspicuous among them was a hunched old man who seemed utterly devoid of vigor, as though he were approaching the end of his life.
Yet it was this very old man who caused every student to tremble.
His image was displayed in many aristocratic clans. He was the number one expert in the entire Frost Kingdom, as well as the headmaster of the Heavenly Book Academy—Qi Daobei.
“First of all, congratulations on completing the trial and becoming true students of the Heavenly Book Academy.”
Qi Daobei stood with his hands behind his back and looked down at the students. “The points you obtained during this contest will be retained, as will the levels of your tokens. These will be of great use to you after you enter the academy.”
“The Heavenly Book Academy has the Clearheart Pagoda, a library, an armory, an alchemy pavilion, and many other facilities. Whether you can enter them or purchase anything from them will depend on the level of your token and the number of points you possess.”
“Money from the outside world is completely useless within the academy. Points are the foundation of everything here. If you have enough points, you can obtain anything you want in the academy!”
“During the trial, points were relatively easy to acquire. Whether by slaying vicious beasts, seizing points from other students, or obtaining inheritances, you could earn points. But after entering the academy, points will become extremely difficult to obtain.”
“For example, during the trial, slaying a third-rank vicious beast earned you one point, while slaying a fourth-rank vicious beast earned you ten points. Within the academy, however, slaying a third-rank vicious beast will earn you only half a point, and slaying a fourth-rank vicious beast will earn you only five points.”
“Of course, to facilitate your cultivation, the academy distributes a fixed number of points every month. Each student receives two thousand points monthly. You may also complete missions posted on the academy’s task board by the academy or by individual teachers and earn points that way.”
“Oh, and the top one hundred freshmen of every class will receive additional benefits. Their monthly point allowance will be considerably higher than that of ordinary students.”
Qi Daobei continued explaining everything to the new students in an unhurried manner, while Lin Fan quietly summarized the information below.
In short, points were everything in the academy. Without points, you were nothing.
Everything within the academy—food, clothing, lodging, daily necessities, cultivation resources, weapons, and countless other things—required points.
Yet the academy distributed only two thousand points to each student every month. Even entering the first level of the Clearheart Pagoda required ten days’ worth of points, making that allowance barely sufficient.
Moreover, it was impossible to spend all one’s points in the Clearheart Pagoda. What about learning martial techniques or cultivation arts? What about seeking guidance from teachers on matters one did not understand?
There were simply too many things that required points.
There were many ways to obtain them.
The first was to complete tasks from the task board. Such tasks might be issued by the academy, other students, or teachers. Each task would have its difficulty level and point reward clearly marked.
If one accepted and completed a task, one would receive the corresponding number of points.
The second method was to slay vicious beasts or exchange various heavenly treasures and rare materials for points. Few people chose this method, however. Slaying vicious beasts was too troublesome, while exchanging precious treasures was an even greater waste.
The third method was to challenge other students for points, or to wager points in a duel.
At the Heavenly Book Academy, the top one hundred students of each class enjoyed benefits that made everyone envious, particularly the amount of points distributed to them every month. As a result, every student wanted to break into the top one hundred and replace one of those ranked there.
Everyone knew that all students received two thousand points each month, but the top one hundred received additional rewards according to their rankings.
The first-ranked student received an extra ten thousand points in addition to the regular two thousand.
The second-ranked student received an extra eight thousand points in addition to the regular two thousand.
The third-ranked student received an extra five thousand points in addition to the regular two thousand.
Students ranked fourth through tenth received an extra three thousand points in addition to the regular two thousand.
Students ranked eleventh through one hundredth received an extra two thousand points in addition to the regular two thousand.
In other words, the top student of a class received twelve thousand points every month—an amount incomparably greater than the two thousand points available to ordinary students.
With more points, one could study higher-level martial techniques and more advanced cultivation arts, enter deeper levels of the Clearheart Pagoda, and obtain better weapons. As time passed, the resulting difference in strength would become enormous.
That was why the challenge system existed.
Anyone could challenge another student to raise their own ranking and enter the top one hundred.
The Heavenly Book Academy had a rule: when challenged by someone ranked above them, students could refuse. But when challenged by someone ranked below them, they had to accept two challenges within a month if more than two people challenged them. Otherwise, all their points would be deducted and they would be expelled from the top one hundred.
Naturally, if no one challenged them, or if only one person did, the rule did not apply.
The requirement of two accepted challenges only came into effect when more than two people issued challenges.
Likewise, lower-year students could challenge higher-year students. Under the same rule, if more than two challenges were issued, the higher-year student had to accept two of them each month.
Every six months, the academy held a grand competition to assess the students’ cultivation progress. Those ranked near the top would also receive powerful secret treasures or substantial point rewards.
It was said that last year’s first-place student received a full fifty thousand points.
