Chapter 25: Call the Police for Me
Zhou Qiang arrived late, sending his men to search for Shen Mo around the outskirts of Purple Gold Mountain. However, it didn’t take long before Zhou Qiang changed his mind. Shen Mo cherished Gu Luosheng as if she were his very life; now that she was in danger, he must have entered the mountains himself in search of her. Therefore, Zhou Qiang ordered everyone into the mountain, and even joined the search in person, looking for both Shen Mo and Gu Luosheng.
Given the special circumstances—the depth of the mountain and the relentless rain—the police also needed extra hands to help search for Gu Luosheng. Yet, for safety, the search teams had to move in groups to prevent any lone accidents.
When Gu Luosheng fell from the cliff, she clawed desperately at anything she could grasp on the slope, her hands and arms scraped raw and bleeding. Her mind was blank, each outstretched hand felt like a greeting to death itself. Luck, however, was on her side. The trees below the cliff cushioned her fall, slowing her descent until she and her backpack ended up hanging precariously from a branch.
The branch bore marks of splitting, and finally, with the rain pouring down, it snapped completely. Gu Luosheng crashed down into a low-lying area. The searing pain sent her vision spinning into darkness, and she lost consciousness at once.
Raindrops pattered against her cheeks as she slowly awakened from her faint. All around her was pitch black, nothing visible. The memories of her fall gradually returned, and a fierce will to survive forced her to gather her strength.
Her phone rang and beeped with messages from time to time; she wanted to reach for it, but the agony in her body forbade it. Fear and cold pressed in around her. If she stayed in the rain much longer, she would likely freeze to death from hypothermia.
With a groan, she struggled to move her arm, pain twisting her features. In the darkness, aside from the rain, only her ragged breaths broke the silence. It took almost an hour to simply fish out her phone.
She touched the screen, but the rain made it unresponsive; she managed only to make it light up. In the endless night, this was her only beacon, her sole hope for rescue.
Gu Luosheng wiped her phone again and again, trying countless times until she finally unlocked it with her fingerprint. The phone automatically opened to WeChat, and though her vision was blurred, she could vaguely make out a chat window.
She tried to dial for help, but she couldn't select the "+" function. By sheer accident, she sent a short voice message—only the sound of rain. It was brief, but it was enough: whoever received it could confirm that Gu Luosheng was still alive.
A request to share her real-time location came through. Gu Luosheng painstakingly tapped at the screen.
At the very last moment before she lost consciousness, her location was sent out.
…
Gu Luosheng dreamed a very long dream. In it, there was a man and a woman whose faces she could not see clearly, but they claimed to be her parents, come to take her home.
She reached out again and again to embrace them, but each attempt ended in failure.
A sharp scent of disinfectant filled her nose. With effort, she opened her eyes, the ceiling lights above making her blink in confusion.
“She’s awake! She’s awake!”
Someone shouted, and several people gathered around her—Gu Yunqi, Gu Yunzhou, and even Gu Qingwan was there.
Am I still alive? She thought. How wonderful.
“Doctor, the patient is awake!” Gu Yunqi called out, pressing the bedside button to summon the medical staff.
A doctor hurried in and gave Gu Luosheng a brief examination. “Good, you’re awake. The injuries are severe, but with some time and care, you’ll recover.”
“Gu Luosheng, is that right? Can you hear me?” After speaking to the others, the doctor tried to communicate with her.
“If you hear me, blink twice.”
Gu Luosheng slowly blinked twice, finally easing the tension in Gu Yunqi’s face.
Fatigue swept over her, and she drifted back to sleep.
When she woke again, she had been transferred to a regular ward, and to her surprise, Aunt Wang was caring for her.
“Miss Gu, you’re finally awake!” Aunt Wang was delighted as she brought her a cup of water.
“Miss Gu, the doctor said you should drink a little when you wake up.”
Gu Luosheng moistened her lips on the rim, only tasting water with Aunt Wang’s help.
“Aunt Wang… am I not dead?” Her voice was so hoarse that even she barely recognized it.
Aunt Wang explained, “Miss Gu, you’ve been unconscious for three days. During that time, the young master was by your side the whole while. Only just after you woke, he and the others went to rest.”
“But he said he’d come see you tonight. How are you feeling? Do you want me to call the doctor?”
Gu Luosheng gave a weak nod.
Soon a doctor arrived to check on her. “Your body is in recovery now. It’s normal for the wounds to hurt and itch.”
“Make sure the injuries don’t get wet, keep your diet light, and take your prescribed medicine on time.”
“Alright, thank you.” Aunt Wang carefully noted every instruction; she was well-versed in such matters.
Gu Luosheng’s hands had scabbed over, but the wounds on her arms and other parts were still serious—deep scratches, even fractures.
To have survived was nothing short of a miracle.
“Aunt Wang, could you do me a favor?”
Aunt Wang quickly leaned in, “Miss Gu, just say the word!”
“Call the police.”
“What?” Aunt Wang thought she’d misheard, until Gu Luosheng repeated it over and over, “Help me call the police!”
Aunt Wang grew flustered. This was no small matter, so she decided to call Gu Yunqi first.
“Young Master, Miss Gu is awake… She wants me to call the police for her…”
“I don’t know what happened, but she keeps asking for the police.”
“All right, I’ll wait for you.”
After hanging up, Aunt Wang returned to Gu Luosheng. “Miss Gu, I called the young master. He said he’s coming right away.”
Gu Luosheng closed her eyes. The memory of being pushed off the cliff kept replaying in her mind. Call the police… Would it help?
She had no evidence. How could she accuse Gu Qingwan as the culprit?
The police would only detain Gu Qingwan for twenty-four hours at most based on Gu Luosheng’s testimony alone. Without solid evidence within that time, Gu Qingwan would walk free.
Half an hour later, Gu Yunqi arrived at the hospital in a rush.
He looked at Gu Luosheng with concern. “Luosheng, how are you feeling? Any better?”
