Chapter 62 Want to Sleep Together
"Wei Nanxing? You haven't left yet?"
Hearing the voice beside him, Wei Nanxing snapped back to reality. He looked to the side and instantly collided with a pair of dark, ink-like eyes.
Wei Nanxing's pupils constricted slightly. He stared fixedly at Wen Xiao, as if trying to carve his appearance into the depths of his mind.
He gazed at the other person with meticulous intensity, refusing to lower his head or avert his eyes any longer. He discovered that compared to fleeing from the other's gaze out of a guilty conscience, looking directly into these eyes granted him a far greater sense of fulfillment.
This was courage, something Xiao Xiao had always taught him, starting from an autumn many years ago, from the first time he pushed open his father's bedroom door, from the first time he fluently spoke a complete sentence, and from the very first time he learned what fondness meant.
"I... was waiting for you," Wei Nanxing said in a low voice.
Only then did Wen Xiao notice that Wei Nanxing was still wearing his fencing uniform, and he pulled him into the locker room.
"Come inside and change your clothes before heading back. There's no one else in here."
As soon as Wei Nanxing stepped through the door, he saw Song Jingbai, who had also removed his mask. Song Jingbai was sitting in a chair with bandages wrapped around his hand—it didn't take a genius to figure out whose handiwork that was.
Though he hadn't witnessed it with his own eyes just now, his mind could vividly picture Xiao Xiao crouching beside the other man, gently wiping medicine onto his hand and bandaging his wound.
A familiar sense of stifling congestion rose in his chest. Even that face of his, which usually wore a smile, turned slightly harsh, and he subconsciously turned his head away.
Yet Song Jingbai seemed entirely oblivious to his hostility. Instead, he greeted him with a beaming smile, looking at him cheerfully: "Were you waiting for Xiao Xiao at the entrance?"
Wei Nanxing glanced at him, feeling as though Song Jingbai had completely seen through him. However, in front of Wen Xiao, he had no choice but to suppress his emotions. He gave a cold, brief nod and walked off on his own with his clothes toward one of the partitioned cubicles.
"Why is he getting more and more unreasonable?" Song Jingbai chuckled. "His expression is even scarier than before."
"Is he?" Wen Xiao frowned.
He thought about it and decided that he was quite used to Wei Nanxing looking like that. Even though they had grown up, the reclusive temperament from his childhood hadn't changed at all; he still disliked crowded places and preferred staying by himself.
Still, there was nothing wrong with that, as long as Wei Nanxing felt comfortable. Some people liked bustling crowds while others preferred quiet, and both were fine.
Song Jingbai cast a glance at the door that Wei Nanxing had just closed and said with an enigmatic smile, "You're probably the only one who thinks so."
A rustling sound came from inside the cubicle. Hearing it, Wen Xiao curiously called out toward the interior: "Wei Nanxing?"
"It's nothing..." A muffled voice came from within, and it quickly grew quiet again, leaving only the sound of fabric rubbing against fabric.
Song Jingbai tilted his chin up, raising a hand to untie the collar button of his fencing protector. Seeing him lift his injured hand, Wen Xiao couldn't help walking over, bending down to undo the clasp for him.
"Now you know how inconvenient it is to get hurt."
"Aren't you here for that?" Song Jingbai said with a smile.
Wen Xiao couldn't help rolling his eyes at him: "Are you going to rely on me for the rest of your..." The rest of your life? Will you need me to take care of you for the rest of your life?
In the future, when you get hurt, there will be someone much closer to take care of you and bandage your wounds; when you get drunk, there will be someone closer by your side; when you are afraid of the dark, there will be someone else to act as your moon.
But no matter what, that person shouldn't be him...
"Is forever not allowed?"
While Wen Xiao's thoughts were wandering into the distance, his unfinished sentence was interrupted by a sudden, probing question.
He raised his gaze and locked eyes with Song Jingbai.
The other man leaned back against the wooden chair in the locker room, posing with such elegance that he might as well have been lounging on a Rococo velvet sofa. His narrow, fox-like eyes clearly reflected his figure, and his tone carried a trace of amusement, making it impossible to tell whether he was joking or not.
Wen Xiao was momentarily stunned. Back when they were children, they often loved making grand declarations about being together forever, but he had never taken them seriously, simply dismissing them as childish nonsense. Yet at their current age, uttering those three words seemed to carry the heavy weight of a promise.
It made him feel somewhat delicate and uncertain.
"I won't take advantage of you. You take care of me, and of course I'll let you boss me around. How about that?" Song Jingbai stared at Wen Xiao, promptly stepping in to snap him out of his runaway thoughts.
Wen Xiao's first reaction upon hearing this was to frown. He glared at the other man and retorted, "Not take advantage? Haven't you taken enough advantage of me in the past? Like sneaking into my bed, secretly flipping through my homework notebooks... and checking the cup I used to drink milk."
"If I did those things secretly, how would you know?" Song Jingbai looked at him with a smile.
He certainly couldn't admit that sneaking through homework notebooks happened because he had accidentally noticed someone doodling and writing the name of the person they liked on the pages, and for some inexplicable reason, he ended up flipping through Wen Xiao's notebook out of sheer curiosity.
Of course, the result was that he found nothing at all; Wen Xiao's notebook was as clean as the boy himself, yet on that blank paper, his own name had never been written.
As for checking the milk cup, it was entirely to make sure the milk had been finished before it grew cold.
Song Jingbai let out a soft laugh and raised his hands in an innocent shrug. After stripping off his fencing protector, he said, "Then how about you take advantage of me in return?"
Hearing this, Wen Xiao looked him up and down and remarked, "What kind of advantage could I possibly take of you..."
"Anything you want," Song Jingbai said with a smile.
Wen Xiao's gaze drifted to Song Jingbai's strikingly handsome face. The gentle, subtle smile the other wore year-round made his features look as bright as a clear sky after snow, tinged with the distinct crispness and radiance of winter.
Then his eyes moved downward, landing on the waist and abdomen wrapped tightly beneath the fitting fencing uniform, which inexplicably brought back memories of the previous night in the shower room of Song Jingbai's dormitory.
The rolling plumes of white steam had blurred his vision, accompanied by the sound of the other's slightly heavy breathing in his ears.
Wen Xiao figured he must have lost his mind to be thinking of that again. His gaze grew somewhat unnatural as he cursed the other man as a little fox in his heart.
"What if I demand that you hand the Song family over to me?" Wen Xiao crossed his arms, a triumphant smile tugging at his brows and eyes, fully convinced that Song Jingbai had dug his own grave.
This time, he had truly dropped a rock on his own foot.
"Alright," Song Jingbai replied without a moment's hesitation, then looked at Wen Xiao with a smile. "Just that? Is there anything else?"
Marry me, and I am yours, so naturally, the Song family is yours as well.
His tone even sounded a bit regretful as he sighed, "I actually thought Xiao Xiao might want something else, like my..."
"Have you lost your mind?" Wen Xiao blurted out.
No matter how he looked at it, he wasn't a member of the Song family. Either Song Jingbai was crazy, or he was messing with him.
Yet the extreme sincerity in the other's expression made him suspect that Song Jingbai was genuinely considering the matter.
"I can do that too," came Wei Nanxing's voice from behind.
He had pushed open the door of the cubicle, having already changed back into his arrival uniform. Walking up beside Wen Xiao, he enunciated every single word clearly: "Whatever he can do, I can do as well."
Song Jingbai looked at Wei Nanxing and said with a smile, "Wei Chuan is back. Did you know?"
Wei Nanxing remained silent.
Upon hearing this, Wen Xiao couldn't help frowning. He was far from unfamiliar with the name Wei Chuan; they had crossed paths and held a grudge against Wei Chuan ever since the incident with the stray kitten in their childhood days.
Even now, Wei Chuan remained the legitimate eldest young master of the Wei family, backed by a mother with an equally impressive family background, as well as a maternal grandfather and uncle holding him up.
In comparison, Wei Nanxing, who was also an heir, appeared much more isolated and powerless. After all, Wei Nanxing's mother had passed away long ago, and he probably didn't even remember what she looked like.
And during the period when Wei Nanxing was first brought back into the Wei family, something must have happened for him to show such fear toward Wei Chuan.
Wen Xiao couldn't help glancing at Wei Nanxing, assuming the other was still worrying about this matter, and instinctively reassured him, "Don't be afraid, we're all here."
After all, Wei Nanxing wasn't alone anymore; at the very least, he had them.
By the time Wen Xiao went into the cubicle to change into his clothes, Wei Nanxing and Song Jingbai were left outside, locking gazes. Only, one of them wore a completely expressionless face, stripping away even the tiny hint of human warmth he usually displayed around Wen Xiao, making him look like a cold machine.
The other was the exact opposite, always wearing a gentle breeze-like smile, though the words he uttered were far from mild.
"You'd better keep a tight leash on Wei Chuan and not let a mad dog bite people at random," Song Jingbai lowered his voice to say.
Wei Nanxing glanced at him without a word. After a prolonged silence, he blurted out unceremoniously, "I won't give him to you."
Song Jingbai paused briefly before realizing he was referring to Wen Xiao. He shifted his weight slightly, assuming a lazy and casual posture, and then smiled: "There's no need for that."
I don't need anyone to "give" him to me.
"If I don't even have that much confidence, what right would he have to choose me?" Song Jingbai said with a smile.
Wei Nanxing pressed his lips into a tight line and stopped talking. He had known for a long time that he could never win a verbal sparring match against Song Jingbai.
Song Jingbai picked up his clothes and retreated into another cubicle to change. Although his hand was injured, it wasn't enough to strip him of basic self-care abilities.
While he could have asked Xiao Xiao to help him change, he understood that one shouldn't push too aggressively; pressing too hard might end up scaring the person away.
Instead, he would test the waters step by step to uncover the other's true feelings.
By the time they returned to the dormitory, it was already past nine-thirty in the evening.
Reaching the third floor, Wen Xiao shoved the two of them forward, urging them to go upstairs, before walking down the third-floor corridor himself. He turned back to wave at them, telling them to head back early.
After a moment's thought, Wen Xiao added, "Goodnight."
"Goodnight," Wei Nanxing said, while unable to suppress the wish that it were just the two of them right now.
He wanted to hear Xiao Xiao say goodnight to him alone.
Back in his room, Wen Xiao prepared to take a shower, but inadvertently caught sight of the purple card he had tucked into his backpack. The back of the card still bore the stamped blue-purple iris flower.
He pulled open his drawer, retrieved the other card that had slipped out from a book previously, and placed the two cards side by side.
Was this someone's prank? Did they want to see him make a fool of himself, or were they waiting to see how he would handle it?
Since he had returned late with Song Jingbai and the others, and didn't want to disrupt his classes for the next day, Wen Xiao decided to wait until tomorrow to find a suitable time to check the surveillance footage.
Tossing the two cards casually back into the drawer, Wen Xiao headed to the bathroom to shower. Afterward, he emerged wrapped in a bathrobe without putting on pants, sat straight down in his chair, and began drying his hair.
