Chapter 62: The Two Brothers Locking Horns
Sheng Cang pressed his thin lips together, suppressing his rising temper.
"What's the use of that?"
Feng Zhaoning chuckled, stood up, and waved a hand. "You may leave now."
The doctors hurriedly packed up their equipment.
In barely ten minutes, not a single trace of them was left behind.
Feng Zhaoning was in a rather good mood.
He looked down from above at Lin Mo, who was already growing drowsy on the sofa.
"Is Momo hungry?"
"I apologize. Brother lost track of time while working."
Sheng Cang instructed the servants, "Go prepare dinner."
It was already nine o'clock.
At the thought that Feng Zhaoning had kept his younger sister without even a drop of water, Sheng Cang lowered his eyes and sneered.
His gaze was entirely unwelcoming.
"Now that you've stayed long enough, you should leave here."
Feng Zhaoning clicked his tongue. "I can leave, but my sister leaves with me."
Sheng Cang snapped, "Don't even dream about it."
Feng Zhaoning raised his phoenix-like eyes, dark shadows lurking in their depths.
Lin Mo glanced at Sheng Cang, then at Feng Zhaoning.
"Ahem." She asked, "Weren't the other brothers supposed to come today?"
"There's still no word from them, so I suppose they aren't coming anymore, right?"
"They will arrive in due course, just not today." Sheng Cang unclasped the luxury watch from his wrist and tossed it casually onto the coffee table.
His tone softened a fraction. "Momo, let's have dinner."
"Your body is malnourished; you shouldn't be starving yourself."
Feng Zhaoning knew Sheng Cang had taken a dislike to him.
However, he didn't care.
He washed his hands, took off his white lab coat, and seated himself gracefully at the dining table.
When facing others, he possessed the frail air of a scholar-gentleman.
His spine was slender and straight.
Usually, he spent most of his time reading books and studying medicine. To those unfamiliar with him, he truly looked like an otherworldly gentleman.
Li Ya and Qiu'er hurried over to serve them.
Lin Mo announced, "I'm going upstairs to change into casual clothes."
With that, she headed up the stairs.
In the dining room, only the two men remained.
Sheng Cang's eyes were sharp and glacial. "Did you come here just to torture Momo?"
"You know very well how I feel about Momo. I wouldn't bear to hurt even a hair on her head."
Sheng Cang sneered coldly, dark light flickering in his deep, shadowed eyes. "Then what was the point of staging such a grand spectacle?"
Feng Zhaoning rested his hand on the table, his fingertips tapping twice against the surface.
He let out a soft sigh. "Mubing never touched her."
His eyes narrowed slightly, the corners of his mouth curling into a smile.
***
Sheng Cang met his gaze with a cold stare.
He understood the implication.
Regardless of what his sister had experienced in the past, Sheng Cang did not care.
Because she was his one and only treasured pearl.
Sheng Cang asked, "And what if he had?"
"Simple." Feng Zhaoning clicked his tongue. "I would lock him away and cut him into pieces, sliver by sliver."
"The ancient execution of Lingchi truly tests a knife's craftsmanship."
He raised his hand and looked at his own clean, pale fingers. The skin was so fair that the blue veins on the back of his hand were starkly visible.
"I am confident I could keep him alive until the very last moment."
There was a hint of frantic, obsessive madness in Feng Zhaoning's eyes. "Even with such a lesson, it somehow still doesn't seem like enough."
Qiu'er, who was dishing out rice nearby, trembled like a leaf in the wind.
Her face drained of color, and she set the bowls and chopsticks down.
Only Qiu'er's world of suffering had been achieved!
She bowed respectfully and backed away, retreating into the kitchen where sweat poured from her like rain.
Li Ya asked in confusion, "What's wrong with you?"
"Nothing, severe mental trauma." Qiu'er leaned against the wall. "Why don't you go serve the dishes later?"
Li Ya shook her head. "I wouldn't dare."
Qiu'er... "Should we play rock-paper-scissors to decide?"
At the thought of the two terrifying demon kings outside, Li Ya suggested, "How about we... wait until Miss comes downstairs before we go out to serve?"
Qiu'er nodded frantically. "That makes sense, I'll listen to you."
*Tap, tap, tap.*
Lin Mo came downstairs wearing casual clothes, holding her old phone in her hand.
She briefly scanned the messages on WeChat.
Most of them had been sent by members of the Lin family.
Sitting at the dining table, she sensed that the atmosphere remained unchanged and silently put her phone away.
"Brothers, aren't you hungry too? Hurry up and eat."
"Momo, why didn't you eat properly at the Lin household?" Feng Zhaoning scooped a bowl of soup for her as if nothing had happened. "You're malnourished, and your stomach isn't well either."
"Stomach ailments are nothing to scoff at; they can range from minor to severe and shouldn't be neglected."
"Brother will properly nurse you back to health."
Sheng Cang frowned. "And yet you were the one starving her?"
Feng Zhaoning pressed his lips together and corrected him with great patience, "That won't happen again."
Qiu'er and Li Ya hurried over to serve the dishes. Once the massive spread of food was laid out, they promptly scurried away.
The villa was once again empty—at least on the surface, not a single soul could be seen.
Lin Mo took a sip of soup.
Her brothers chatted casually about matters within their organization.
Their words were obscure, and Lin Mo did not interrupt.
Glancing at her WeChat, she noticed Qin Lian's profile picture suddenly pop up with a new notification.
It was a broadcast message.
"Good evening! Today, my beloved daughter has the good fortune of being accepted into A University, how utterly blissful. We are hosting a coming-of-age and enrollment banquet in celebration, and warmly invite everyone to attend! Tomorrow afternoon at three o'clock, we await your presence at the Wuhu Restaurant!"
Lin Mo's expression darkened.
An enrollment banquet?
Having stolen someone else's life, how could they still have the gall to be so ostentatious?
It seemed the Lin family was still basking in supreme glory.
Lin Mo pressed her lips together, a cold sneer forming in her heart.
She immediately used her identity as the CEO of Yaoming Group to instruct her subordinates to leak the news that she, too, would be holding her own enrollment banquet tomorrow!
"Momo, why the unhappiness?" Feng Zhaoning looked back at Lin Mo, acutely sensing her shift in mood.
Lin Mo smiled. "Nothing. I've decided to hold my enrollment banquet tomorrow afternoon at three o'clock."
Feng Zhaoning lowered his gaze, his thoughts calm.
In the depths of his eyes, a trace of a smile surfaced.
"Very well, Brother is looking forward to your enrollment banquet."
He stirred the hot soup in front of him with a spoon. It would be even better if all those blind fools dared to show up.
"What gift does Momo want?" he asked with a smile, the doting affection in his gaze practically overflowing. "Anything at all."
Sheng Cang added in a deep voice, "I'll handle the arrangements. Every person of status and standing in A City must attend."
"No one would dare refuse to give me face."
Lin Mo looked at her brothers, a warm feeling blossoming in her chest.
Without even asking for the reason, they stood as her firmest and most unshakeable backing.
How wonderful.
"I've already arranged everything, you two just need to show up."
"However, your identities are special. Won't running around everywhere attract other people's attention?"
Feng Zhaoning reached out to stroke Lin Mo's cheek. "Brother isn't afraid of attracting attention."
Staring at his hand, Sheng Cang's expression turned pitch black.
He snapped the chopsticks in his hand directly in two.
Meanwhile, at the Lin household.
Seeing that her mother had already sent out the invitations, Lin Wan smiled warmly. "Mom, Wuhu Restaurant is the largest restaurant in A City. You really went all out this time, didn't you?"
Qin Lian sighed helplessly. "Of course your enrollment banquet has to be held in grand style, to sweep away our family's recent bad luck."
"And most importantly, business hasn't been going too well lately."
"Your father's idea was to use this opportunity to rally some old friends."
She turned her gaze back to her daughter with a smile. "But the most important thing is that our Wanwan is the star of the banquet. I've already arranged for people to decorate the venue for you."
"Look, so many people have already replied with congratulations, saying you're bound for greatness."
"It's guaranteed to be glorious and grand. I'll invite a few more people so you can save face."
Lin Wan was overjoyed. The atmosphere at home had been simply dreadful lately.
It had been far too long since she last felt truly happy.
"You're the only one who dotes on me, Mom."
