The moment Li Hui heard this, she hurriedly said, “Our manager is right here.”
Liu Fei straightened his collar and said respectfully, “Young Master Zeng! I’m the manager, Liu Fei!”
He assumed Young Master Zeng was about to praise and reward him.
“We were only doing what we were supposed to do. It was our duty!”
Zeng Ke was growing impatient. “I want to see the general manager. Are you people deaf?”
Liu Fei and Li Hui exchanged bewildered glances.
Why was this turning out so differently from what he had imagined?
Seeing Zeng Ke’s temper, Mu Bai’s heart sank as well.
He pulled Lin Wan behind him. “Wanwan, whatever happens later, stay behind me. Remember?”
“Brother Mu Bai…” Concern filled Lin Wan’s eyes. “Even now, with Mo Mo in such a situation, she’s still acting like this.”
“She doesn’t cherish your feelings at all. It breaks my heart to see you suffer…”
“Is it really worth worrying so much over her?”
Mu Bai replied, “It’s a sense of responsibility.”
Lin Wan clung to his arm. “Then you have to protect yourself.”
Mu Bai felt a warmth spread through him. “All right, you silly girl. Our Mu family is no weaker than the Zeng family. Don’t be afraid.”
Lin Wan held onto the hem of his shirt and obediently nodded. “Mm.”
Lin Mo was thoroughly annoyed by their self-righteous behavior.
She glanced down at the time, growing increasingly anxious.
Her train had been scheduled for two in the afternoon. If she missed it, she would have to wait until tomorrow.
She climbed down from the bench and walked toward Zeng Ke.
He could not help retreating a little.
If he had not been sitting in a wheelchair, he would certainly have backed away much farther.
Looking down at him, Lin Mo asked, “Can’t you afford to lose?”
Zeng Ke stammered, “Uh…”
Could she at least listen to his explanation?
“Lin Mo!” Mu Bai hurriedly called out.
At a time like this, how could she still speak in that tone?
After doing something like this, how could she remain so calm and composed?
He seized Lin Mo by the arm, his eyes filled with utter disappointment. “Stop fooling around, all right?”
By then, the general manager had already come out.
“Young Master Zeng, you wanted to see me?”
Zeng Ke coughed. He did not understand what was going on between them, but handling the main matter was more important.
“What is wrong with your bank? How did this turn into such a mess?”
The general manager froze. “Liu Fei, what happened?”
Liu Fei quickly explained, “It’s like this…”

He recounted the entire matter in detail.
Wiping the sweat from his forehead, he said, “We should have notified Young Master Zeng immediately. This was our negligence…”
“We only thought the young lady was still so young, and that taking the check might have been a moment of foolishness, so we didn’t report it to the police right away.”
Even now, he still thought Young Master Zeng was taking his anger out on them.
Zeng Ke let out a cold laugh. “Who the hell told you the check wasn’t given to her by me?”
“Did I send you a message from my hospital bed in a dream?”
“Hurry up, cash the check for her and apologize!”
The moment Zeng Ke said this, everyone was dumbfounded.
So this had all been one enormous misunderstanding?
Liu Fei staggered back two steps, his face whiter than paper.
Li Hui’s lips trembled as well. She realized that she had probably brought disaster upon herself.
Lin Wan frowned. How was this possible? How could a country bumpkin like Lin Mo have any connection with a spoiled heir like Young Master Zeng?
They belonged to entirely different circles!
Mu Bai frowned. “Young Master Zeng, are you saying that this check really belongs to Mo Mo?”
“Otherwise? Who would be stupid enough to steal a check from the Zeng family?”
Mu Bai’s heart gave a violent jolt, and he instinctively turned to look at Lin Mo.
The bystanders—especially those who had accused Lin Mo earlier—lowered their heads in shame.
“Wanwan!”
At that moment, Qin Lian finally arrived.
She was panting heavily and furious beyond measure.
The moment she saw the scene, she recognized Zeng Ke. Judging from the atmosphere, he had clearly come to demand an explanation.
Qin Lian’s anger immediately found an outlet. She turned and glared at Lin Mo, then raised her hand and struck her across the face with a sharp slap.
“Smack!”
“You little beast! Have you completely lost your mind?”
“You even dared to steal Young Master Zeng’s check? Do you really think our family has some powerful backing?”
“If the Zeng family blacklists us, we’ll all be finished!”
Caught off guard, Lin Mo was slapped across the face.
She covered her cheek as five stark finger marks quickly appeared against her fair skin.
Her long lashes trembled, the corners of her eyes reddening slightly, and her breathing grew more labored.
She looked truly pitiful.
“Auntie!” Mu Bai finally recovered from his shock.
He had actually misunderstood Lin Mo just now.
It had all been a misunderstanding.
Qin Lian looked at Mu Bai, filled with guilt. “Mu Bai, I’m so sorry. I failed to raise my daughter properly and even caused you to worry and suffer this humiliation.”
Then she looked nervously at Zeng Ke. “Young Master Zeng… please be magnanimous. Don’t hold this against the Lin family.”

The bystanders could no longer bear to watch.
“My goodness, she hit her so hard without even finding out what happened…”
“That poor girl. She only came to withdraw some money and was bullied by all of them. Now she’s even been beaten!”
“What kind of mother is she? She doesn’t even believe her own daughter. And that older sister—she kept adding fuel to the fire and making everyone believe she was guilty. She’s obviously a fake saint!”
“That girl is far too unlucky.”
Qin Lian froze. She was now even more confused about what was happening.
Zeng Ke nearly stood up, but the excruciating pain in his legs forced him back into his wheelchair.
He finally believed that Lin Mo truly was not the daughter the Lin family cherished.
He really had found the wrong person last night!
But now there was another problem…
She was someone Young Master Zheng had specifically warned him never to provoke!
If Young Master Zheng found out about what had happened today, he would be finished!
Moreover, Young Master Zheng had said that Lin Mo was being protected by someone with an even more formidable background…
“What are you people doing?” Zeng Ke was utterly speechless. “You—and you!”
He pointed at Liu Fei and Li Hui. “I don’t want to see either of you at Brightflower Bank again. No, I don’t want to see you at any bank in City A ever again!”
The general manager’s expression turned stern, and he immediately said, “Liu Fei, Li Hui, what you’ve done is utterly absurd!”
“You caused this young lady to suffer such humiliation today. You’re blacklisted!”
“Take your things and get out!”
Liu Fei’s face turned ashen. “Manager, Young Master Zeng, this wasn’t my fault! Li Hui was the one spouting nonsense. I was only deceived!”
The general manager was disgusted. He kicked Liu Fei to the ground. “You’re still worried about saving face? Get out! Get out!”
Seeing that the general manager was truly furious, Liu Fei fled with Li Hui, scrambling away in disgrace.
They knew that from that day onward, they had lost not only their respectable and enviable positions at Brightflower Bank, but would also be blacklisted.
They had practically become beaten dogs wandering in the streets.
They should never have assumed Lin Mo was a thief simply because she was dressed in cheap knockoffs…
Now, the two of them regretted it so bitterly that their insides seemed to turn green.
The room fell silent.
The mess left behind was unbearably awkward.
Mu Bai had always believed that Lin Mo was hated by the entire Lin family because there was something wrong with her character.
But now he suddenly realized that this might not be the whole truth.
For instance, this time, Qin Lian had simply acted far too rashly.
