Chapter 15: You Are Beyond Cure
Lin Wan frowned, looking at Mu Bai with disbelief. How could he still be comforting Lin Mo? Weren’t they supposed to break off the engagement?
“Brother Mu Bai…”
Lin Mo lifted her eyes. “I didn’t steal anything. Do you need me to handle something for you?”
“Don’t admit to everything on my behalf. None of this is my fault.”
Li Hui clicked her tongue. “Young Master Mu kindly came to sort this out for you. How can you be so ungrateful? If we had called the police straight away, you’d be in jail by now.”
Lin Wan chimed in, “Exactly, Mo Mo, don’t be so stubborn.”
“If Mom and Dad find out about this, they’ll be really disappointed in you.”
“You should think about your own future. Just confess honestly, okay?”
Mu Bai sighed. “Lin Mo, why can’t you change your stubborn ways?”
“I know you’re upset, but this isn’t a small matter. If you apologize, out of respect for the Mu family’s name, they won’t pursue it.”
“If you really end up in jail, how will you face anyone afterward?”
As Mu Bai spoke, he reached out to take Lin Mo’s hand, but she avoided him. He clearly saw the trace of disdain in her eyes, as if he were something filthy.
Mu Bai was speechless. The little shadow that always followed him around—how could she look at him like that?
“Mo Mo, what’s wrong with you?” he asked, losing patience.
Lin Wan said, “Brother Mu Bai, forget it. Don’t worry so much. You always get wronged around Mo Mo, and it pains me to see it.”
“I’ll contact Mom and have her come handle this.”
Lin Mo felt physically sick watching them. She took a deep breath and pulled out her phone. She hesitated about contacting Lin Hen since he knew about this, but he wouldn’t stand by her. He might even mock her alongside Lin Wan.
She gave a bitter smile. Why humiliate herself?
Liu Fei kept complaining, “Why is this girl so stubborn? It’s like biting the hand that feeds her.”
“You should be grateful Young Master Mu came all this way to help you.”
“Of course, don’t blame us for exposing you. If you let it slide, you’ll end up behind bars. We’re only looking out for you, hoping you’ll see the right path.”
Liu Fei spoke with self-righteousness, as if he were a saint.
Li Hui praised, “Manager Liu, we all know your integrity. You’re an outstanding employee with high moral standards.”
—
The people around joined in.
“Yes, Manager Liu is a good person. This girl doesn’t appreciate your kindness now, but she will one day.”
“Little girl, you call yourself a thief, and so many people are worried about you. You can’t just ignore their advice.”
“Exactly. If it weren’t for their kindness, you’d be at the police station by now, not here throwing a tantrum.”
“If you don’t listen now, you’ll regret it later.”
Liu Fei felt smug and hurried over to Mu Bai, showing off, “Young Master Mu, don’t worry. I’ll take care of this for you.”
“Mu is a VLP client of our bank. You don’t have to worry.”
“I’ll return the check to the Zeng family shortly. They definitely won’t hold this girl responsible.”
Lin Wan breathed a sigh of relief. “Manager Liu, thank you so much. My sister was just confused for a moment. She’s not a bad person.”
“When we get home, I’ll educate her properly so she won’t do anything like this again.”
“You two are sisters? There’s quite a gap,” Liu Fei remarked. “If your sister were half as sensible as you, she wouldn’t have done this.”
Li Hui sneered, “Really, the difference between these two sisters is huge. You’d think your sister was adopted if you didn’t know.”
Lin Wan smiled. “No, it’s just that she grew up in the countryside and didn’t receive much education.”
“No wonder. You really need to teach her the law — here, breaking the law means going to jail. It’s not like the countryside!” Li Hui said, her sharp eyes darting over Lin Mo.
Everyone laughed uproariously.
So she came from the countryside, no wonder she didn’t understand the law—she must be illiterate!
Lin Mo faced their mocking gazes, straightening her back without a trace of submission.
With a calm expression, she turned to Lin Wan and said, “Have you said enough?”
“The check is mine, and my parents aren’t here. If you keep pretending, it’s pointless.”
Mu Bai’s face darkened instantly in anger. “Lin Mo, have you no shame?”
“Wan Wan kindly tried to help you, and this is how you respond?”
He had felt some pity for Lin Mo just moments ago, but now he realized he had been fooling himself.
Lin Mo was beyond saving.
“Give the check back to the Zeng family right now!”
“You caused this mess, so handle it yourself. Don’t always expect others to clean up after you!”
Liu Fei clicked his tongue, shaking his head in disbelief at her audacity.
Lin Wan lowered her head, feigning tears but inwardly rejoicing.
She couldn’t understand how Lin Mo could be so self-destructive. Fifty thousand yuan—there was no way that money belonged to Lin Mo. Had she ever seen that much in her life?
Even at death’s door, she still clings to denial.
This would only make Mu Bai despise her more.
Lin Wan thought this matter must be brought to their parents. That way, her brothers and parents would dislike Lin Mo even more—and love her even more.
She took out her phone, snapped a photo, and sent it to her mother along with a brief message.
Qin Lian nearly fainted from anger.
Lin Wan smiled smugly, looking at Lin Mo with some sympathy.
This time, Lin Mo was truly doomed.
Suddenly, someone shouted, “What’s going on here?”
Everyone turned to look.
Li Hui saw it was Zeng Ke and instantly smiled like a blooming flower.
“Oh, Young Master Zeng, you came in person?”
Zeng Ke sat in a wheelchair, his body wrapped in bandages, looking utterly miserable.
But recalling Zheng Xiu’s warning from last night, he felt a chill in his heart.
Liu Fei sighed. “Young Master Zeng is in such a state and still came here himself. This won’t be so easy to settle this time.”
“You really should listen to your sister and Young Master Mu.”
Though he pretended to be kind, Liu Fei crossed his arms and looked on with a relaxed, amused expression.
Young Master Zeng was a second-generation heir with a notoriously bad temper.
No one could get anything from him by bargaining.
This girl was finished today.
Lin Wan eagerly waited to see how Lin Mo would be reprimanded. This was not home—no one would indulge her here.
Mu Bai’s face darkened. “Young Master Zeng, Lin Mo was temporarily confused when she took your check. We’ll return it to you intact and apologize.”
The others didn’t dare breathe loudly.
This was Zeng Ke—the eldest son of the prestigious Zeng family in City A!
Looking at Lin Mo, she still dared to sit calmly, showing no fear of death.
This country bumpkin truly had no idea how terrifying the world could be!
“Young Master Zeng, as soon as I saw the check was yours, I detained her immediately,” Li Hui flaunted her credit. “She’s covered in cheap clothes from street stalls; there’s no way she could get hold of your 500,000-yuan check.”
“The security guards are here, so you can deal with her however you like.”
Zeng Ke frowned, his face darker than a bottomless pot. “Bring out your general manager!”
