Chapter 24: The Importance of the Little Fox

Qing He was so frightened she collapsed weakly to the ground, yet she stubbornly pressed on, “Your Majesty, why? Do you not like me? But didn’t you entrust the little fox to my care?”
“When have I ever given you such a mistaken impression? The reason I entrusted the little fox to you is simply because I find you somewhat agreeable to the eye. And yet, you dared to say in front of me that you wanted to behead my little fox. Who gave you that right?” Xuanyuan Yu’s narrow eyes fixed on Qing He, his face cold with a chilling severity.
The little fox finished drinking the chicken broth and rubbed its mouth against Xuanyuan Yu’s imperial robe, leaving him momentarily speechless. That little fox truly knew how to ruin the atmosphere. “Why are you rubbing against my clothes? Don’t you know that’s dirty?” Xuanyuan Yu summoned a eunuch and took a handkerchief, gently wiping the little fox’s mouth.
“Squeak, squeak, squeak,” the little fox chirped, “Because I like to be clean! If my white fur gets dirty, it won’t look good.” The little fox shook its fur proudly, showing it was a neat and tidy child.
“So you’re a clean little fox, does that mean I’m a dirty person?” Xuanyuan Yu asked the little fox. Though a faint anger crept across his face, it was clear he was not truly upset. Perhaps he didn’t mind the little fox’s behavior at all.
The little fox thought for a moment and realized it might have been wrong. “Squeak, squeak, squeak, alright then, you’re a clean person too. Next time I won’t rub against your clothes.”
“That’s my good little fox.” Xuanyuan Yu praised the fox, casually handing the handkerchief back to the eunuch, who lowered his head to receive it and stepped back. Only now did Ta En fully grasp how important this little fox was to Xuanyuan Yu. He thought to himself, “Good thing I didn’t mistreat this little fox.” He looked down at Qing He with a sneer; this woman had been so arrogant and commanding before, and now she was getting her just deserts. Truly, one who inflicts harm on oneself cannot survive.
“Squeak, squeak, squeak,” the little fox pointed its tiny paw at Qing He, who was kneeling on the ground.

“What is it? Did she bully you?” Xuanyuan Yu asked the little fox gently, his eyes full of affection. Then, turning to Qing He, his gaze was ice-cold—his little fox was not someone she could lay a finger on.
The little fox nodded, “Squeak, squeak, squeak, she took many of my pastries before, the ones that were clearly meant for me. But she snatched them and bullied me—I couldn’t fight back against her.”
Seeing the little fox nod and look so indignant, Xuanyuan Yu’s heart ached with pity. He even thought the little fox had been beaten by Qing He.
“Guards, drag this vile servant out and behead her,” Xuanyuan Yu commanded with a grand gesture. Immediately, guards entered and began to drag Qing He out of the hall.
“Your Majesty, I understand now! Please don’t kill me, I beg for your mercy. I won’t dare mistreat the little fox again!” Qing He cried out in tears, truly terrified. She shouldn’t have been so arrogant and presumptuous.
“How dare you, a lowly servant, claim such familiarity,” the eunuch scolded Qing He.
“Eunuch Li, I know I was wrong. Please plead for me with the Emperor and spare me,” Qing He begged desperately. Under the threat of death, she broke free from two guards and ran to Eunuch Li, clutching his leg in remorse.
Eunuch Li kicked Qing He away with a forceful blow, sending her crashing to the ground, spitting blood. Using his internal energy in the kick, he ensured her injuries were severe and not easily healed. “Hurry, drag this vile servant away. Do you want to disgrace the Emperor’s eyes?”
“Yes, sir.” The two guards hastily dragged Qing He away, and because of her injuries, she could only weep as she was pulled off. Her heart was full of regret—how could she have been so blinded by greed to think she could rise? It was all just delusions, and it had cost her her life.
