Chapter 57: Wen Xiaorou, she is mine! [7]
As soon as Chu Ge hung up the phone, Wen Xiaorou immediately asked, "Director Chu, Assistant Luo and the others haven't arranged any specific tasks for me. What on earth am I supposed to be doing here?"
"Your job is to be my little sidekick and be pleasing to my eyes." Chu Ge leaned sideways, propping his chin with his right arm resting on the back of the chair. He stared, completely captivated, at every single expression on Wen Xiaorou's face as she spoke, so entranced that his answer drifted entirely off track.
Hearing this, Wen Xiaorou’s drowsy eyes instantly lit up. Was Chu Ge sleepwalking? Was she really supposed to be there just to be pleasing to his eyes? Or did this man simply view her as a decorative object, a mobile vase of sorts?
Wen Xiaorou took a deep breath and defended herself, "I am very capable. Don't underestimate my abilities."
Seeing her serious expression, Chu Ge couldn't help laughing, and he teased her further, "I handle the capability, and you handle the visual appeal."
"......" Wen Xiaorou was left utterly speechless. It seemed her future career development goal could now be defined as the Number One Vase of Shangjing.
Seeing that she was hesitant to speak, Chu Ge continued, "Isn't this wonderful? You don't need any pressure; just focus on relieving mine."
Wen Xiaorou felt a flutter of shyness at his words. Chu Ge was the first man to ever speak such sweet nothings to her. Although she knew they were merely polite banter, she still found herself somewhat enjoying them.
Recovering her composure shortly after her momentary shyness, Wen Xiaorou said resolutely, "I will make you realize that transferring me up here is a decision you will never regret. I promise not to embarrass you."
Wen Xiaorou believed that Chu Ge could not possibly have promoted her based solely on her looks; it must have been because her hard work in the past had finally been noticed. Since those remarks were just jokes, she still felt deeply grateful to Chu Ge for recognizing her potential, and she was determined to work hard to prove it.
There was also another major reason why she had to work hard. Wen Xiaorou remembered Jing Nuo's warning that as long as he was around, she would forever remain confined to the front desk. Even if she were to fall from this high-rise building one day, she refused to give Jing Nuo any leverage or gossip to use against her. In front of Jing Nuo, Wen Xiaorou was resolved to preserve every ounce of her dignity.
Seeing her earnest pledge, Chu Ge nodded repeatedly with delight and said, "Mm-mm, I believe in you. I'll arrange your specific duties soon."
"Thank you, Director Chu." Seeing that he had given his promise, Wen Xiaorou bowed ninety degrees in satisfaction to express her gratitude.
True to his word, Chu Ge personally began arranging tasks for her. Having reviewed her resume, he knew that apart from practical field experience, Wen Xiaorou was exceptional in every aspect. Crucially, she was obedient, and her gentle nature was precisely the type Chu Ge favored.
"Xiaorou, let's go out for lunch." Just as Wen Xiaorou brought over the revised data analysis that Chu Ge had requested, he invited her out to eat—a routine that had occurred numerous times ever since her transfer.
Wen Xiaorou let out an "Ah?" and looked somewhat awkward, her face clearly displaying reluctance. Lately, the office had been rife with rumors and gossip about her and Chu Ge being in a romantic relationship.
Although she didn't dislike Chu Ge, having people fabricate stories out of nothing inevitably left her feeling uncomfortable. Yet, she had a weak personality, finding it especially difficult to refuse anyone who treated her well. Even though she always accompanied Chu Ge out to lunch against her will, she invariably ended up being dragged along anyway.
