Chapter 52: Wen Xiaorou, I Choose You! 【2】
Wen Xiaorou understood that perhaps only if she vanished from Jing Nuo's sight forever would he ever forgive her. Perhaps one day, when she began her new life and severed all ties with the Jing family, the two of them might finally let go of their past grievances and make peace.
Yet, her life remained deeply entangled with the Jing family, impossible to untangle.
As Wen Xiaorou was lost in these memories, a car suddenly pulled up beside her. The driver parked steadily, got out immediately, and opened the backseat door for her. "Miss Rou, please get in the car."
Startled by the sudden arrival, Wen Xiaorou quickly raised a hand to wipe the tears from her cheeks, clearly shaken.
Seeing her wipe her tears, the driver silently took her bag and placed it inside the car, then gently helped her into the back seat.
Noticing that Wen Xiaorou was in low spirits, the driver comforted her, saying, "The young master had an unexpected matter to attend to, so he sent me to take Miss Rou back."
Wen Xiaorou forced a smile and replied, "It's alright."
When Wen Xiaorou returned home, Cheng Yiyi was already asleep. After tidying up quietly, Wen Xiaorou slipped into the covers as well, but she couldn't fall asleep no matter how hard she tried. She was hesitating whether she should continue staying at Shangjing. If she left Shangjing, how could she possibly explain it to Elder Jing?
On one side was Jing Nuo, and on the other was Elder Jing. Both sides placed Wen Xiaorou in a difficult position.
The next morning, because Wen Xiaorou had barely slept all night, she did not respond no matter how much Cheng Yiyi called her. It wasn't until the clock ticked past eight that Cheng Yiyi finally dragged Wen Xiaorou out of bed.
Usually, the two of them left early enough to avoid traffic jams, but today they found themselves stuck in intermittent traffic along the way. Inside the car, both of them were so anxious their palms were sweating. If they were late, they would lose an entire week's worth of meal allowance.
By the time they parked the car, they were already a quarter of an hour late. Determined to keep it classified as tardiness rather than extending it to an unexcused absence, Wen Xiaorou and Cheng Yiyi sprinted all the way.
Clutching her handbag, Wen Xiaorou panted as she complained, "Being half an hour late counts as an unexcused absence—what kind of ridiculous rule is that?"
Running ahead, Cheng Yiyi glanced at her watch and replied, "When you eat someone's rice, you have to follow their rules."
Hearing this, Wen Xiaorou frowned and ran even harder, muttering to herself that another scolding was inevitable today.
Taking the elevator from the underground parking garage, Wen Xiaorou dashed into the lobby and went into another frantic sprint. Even though she was late, she had to run hard—at least to let the manager see her effort and know she wasn't deliberately late.
Just as Wen Xiaorou neared the lobby, an obstacle suddenly appeared before her. A tall man was walking straight toward her. Because she was running too fast to brake in time, she crashed squarely into the man's chest. With a soft cry, she bounced backward and flew right out of his embrace.
As Wen Xiaorou looked up to figure out what had happened, she saw a row of neatly dressed people standing before her, both men and women. In the middle stood her ex-husband, Jing Nuo, with a dark expression on his face.
Wen Xiaorou hurriedly scrambled up from the floor and apologized to the man she had collided with, "I'm sorry."
The man had intended to reach out and pull her up, but he was a fraction too late. With a helpless expression, he asked, "Are you hurt?"
Dazed, Wen Xiaorou shook her head and said, "No."
