Chapter 47: An Opponent Who Poses No Threat [3]
“The CEO is coming, the CEO is coming!” Someone at the front desk whispered, setting off a sudden commotion. The receptionists hurriedly bent down, rummaging through their drawers for makeup to touch up.
“Your lipstick needs a little more.”
“Can you check if my powder is even?”
“Are my eyebrows too thick today?”
“Is my scent the CEO’s favorite?”
Witnessing this scene for the first time, Wen Xiaorou was momentarily stunned. Did this happen every day? Were these women openly vying for Jing Nuo’s attention? No wonder he never gave her a second glance.
Watching the group, Wen Xiaorou seemed to understand her own shortcomings. She opened the drawer beneath her and found it completely empty.
Heh, heh. She chuckled to herself, questioning whether she even needed to bother. Did any of this matter to her? Avoiding Jing Nuo was the only thing she truly needed to focus on. What was the point of muddling along with these women?
About three minutes later, the women finally finished their preparations. Outside the lobby, a sleek black Rolls-Royce came to a stop. The bodyguards swiftly opened the rear door, and Jing Nuo’s long legs stepped out with confident strides. As he exited the vehicle, his gaze swept over the company building with such intensity it seemed as if he could devour the entire structure.
“The boss is so handsome.”
“If only the father of my child looked like that, my life would be complete.”
Wen Xiaorou heard these whispered wishes from her colleagues, even as they maintained serious expressions. She found it somewhat amusing—Jing Nuo hadn’t even glanced their way!
“Oh my God! Is the CEO coming over?” The front desk team tensed as his figure drew nearer. Today’s makeup touch-up hadn’t been in vain; the CEO was finally noticing them.
Jing Nuo strode purposefully toward the front desk, his eyes scanning each woman, though apparently not finding what he sought.
“Good morning, CEO.”
“Good morning, CEO.”
As Jing Nuo arrived, everyone bowed politely. Wen Xiaorou stood toward the back, turned sideways, and kept her head lowered to avoid drawing his attention. She didn’t even dare greet him out loud, merely following the others’ lead.
At that moment, she was more nervous than anyone else there, silently praying that Jing Nuo wouldn’t notice her. But fate seemed deaf to her pleas. After sweeping his gaze over the women, finding no one, Jing Nuo stepped toward where Wen Xiaorou stood.
She kept her head bowed and her body turned sideways, her eyebrows trembling. With Jing Nuo drawing ever closer, her anxiety threatened to overwhelm her—it was a feeling more agonizing than seducing him.
Suddenly, Jing Nuo stopped and asked, “New here?”
Wen Xiaorou didn’t know who he was addressing and kept her head lowered.
A girl nearby poked her softly and whispered, “The CEO’s talking to you.”
Startled, Wen Xiaorou responded with a quiet “Ah,” then muffled “Mm.”
The other women wondered if she was out of her mind. The CEO rarely came down to the front desk and even took the time to ask about new employees, yet she kept her head down and refused to acknowledge him.
Jing Nuo asked again, “What’s your name?”
