Chapter 42: A Foreign Encounter [12]
Lin Fan was left somewhat dumbfounded by Wen Xiaorou’s question, unsure how to respond. He was certain Wen Xiaorou had been forced or deceived into going there—there was no other possibility. He reassured himself with absolute certainty; how could Wen Xiaorou have gone willingly to such a place? With firm conviction, he answered, “Nothing happened. I saved you.”
Upon hearing this, Wen Xiaorou let out a long sigh of relief, clasped her hands together, and said, “Thank heavens, I wasn’t sold.”
Lin Fan immediately exploded with concern, looking at Wen Xiaorou. “Xiaorou, who wanted to sell you?”
Wen Xiaorou then recounted in detail everything she had endured after her divorce and while working, telling Lin Fan everything. In the end, with Lin Fan’s escort, she was taken back to the country despite having lost her passport and ID.
After returning home, Wen Xiaorou discovered that Tianli Media had been shut down and the boss’s wife was already detained. She hadn’t even had time to sue the company or the boss’s wife before the company was dealt with, which, in a way, spared her a lot of trouble.
At Cheng Yiyi’s home, Yiyi prepared a lavish feast to celebrate Wen Xiaorou’s safe return. Even though much of it was takeout, Wen Xiaorou was moved by this outpouring of friendship.
In the dining room, Cheng Yiyi gently stroked Wen Xiaorou’s head with deep concern and said, “Xiaorou, don’t be stubborn. Come work with me at Shangjing. At least there you won’t run into scammers.”
Wen Xiaorou chewed her food quietly, pressing her lips tightly as she shook her head. She still remembered Jing Nuo’s words from the day of the divorce clearly: “Don’t let her run back to the Jing family like a stray dog.”
Wen Xiaorou had resolved that even if she ended up washing dishes, she would never return to the Jing family. She was determined not to give Jing Nuo the satisfaction of seeing her fail.
Cheng Yiyi looked at the foolish yet determined Wen Xiaorou and sighed helplessly, chasing after her with questions. “Did Shangjing offend you somehow? This chance is hard to come by. Why won’t you take it? Others would kill to get in.”
The opportunity Yiyi spoke of was a receptionist position she had secured for Wen Xiaorou through connections in the Human Resources department. She feared that Wen Xiaorou, naive and unaware of the dangers, would wander aimlessly and be deceived again. In today’s world, beautiful women were already vulnerable—and Wen Xiaorou, so trusting and pretty, was especially so.
Unhurried, Wen Xiaorou swallowed her food and said slowly, “Anywhere but Shangjing.”
Cheng Yiyi rolled her eyes and tapped her forehead with her index finger. “Stubborn as always.”
Meanwhile, in the Jing family’s villa, the first-floor living room was brightly lit. A few people were playing cards. Feng Jing, holding a mahjong tile, said, “Lin Fan, Jing Nuo divorced and you came back—what’s your intention?”
Lin Fan bit his lip, trying to suppress a smile so it wouldn’t be noticed, and answered calmly, “No particular intention.”
Ji Moran, sitting opposite Lin Fan, caught every expression on his face and couldn’t help but laugh. Did this guy think no one knew his little feelings for Wen Xiaorou? Does he believe his denials would fool anyone? He joined in teasing him: “Xiaorou hasn’t seen you for two years. I wonder if she still remembers you.”
Lin Fan replied indifferently, “Even if Xiaorou forgets everyone else, she won’t forget me. Besides, we’ve already met in Paris. I even saved her life.”
