Chapter 2: A Passing Game【2】
The year she graduated from university, she returned to her homeland from abroad and once again found herself by Jing Nuo’s side. Jing’s father asked her if she liked Jing Nuo, and she nodded enthusiastically, full of joy. Soon after, she married Jing Nuo as she had wished.
“What are you thinking about? It’s time to have a baby,” Jing Nuo whispered softly into Wen Xiaorou’s ear from behind, bending down quietly; he had already finished his meal without her noticing.
Feeling the warm breath near the nape of her neck, Wen Xiaorou shivered all over, her scalp tingling. Jing Nuo’s voice remained as magnetic and melodious as ever, yet it felt unreal, like a dream. Blushing deeply, she turned her head to glance at Jing Nuo. The man was watching her intently, his gaze gentle as water, as if he wished to melt her right there. At Jing Nuo’s words, the three people arguing nearby immediately fell silent and turned to watch the intimate pair.
In that moment, Jing Nuo completely ignored the three and the servants. He scooped Wen Xiaorou up in his arms, carrying her like a princess toward the spiral staircase. She lightly wrapped her arms around his neck, resting quietly in his embrace, savoring every second. Such tenderness from Jing Nuo was rare, especially so close to her, and these moments were precious.
“Let’s hope the child isn’t mute,” Jing’s mother muttered, watching Jing Nuo carry Wen Xiaorou.
“Remember, the baby must be as smart as our Jing Nuo,” Jing’s grandmother added, speaking toward their backs. Wen Xiaorou felt immense pressure from their voices behind her; she thought just being able to give birth was enough without worrying if the child would be as quiet or clever as she was.
The innermost bedroom on the second floor was decorated in ivory white tones, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere. Jing Nuo gently laid Wen Xiaorou down on the bed, shook his arms lightly, then suddenly pounced onto the bed, planting his hands on either side of her head, trapping her in the center.
Wen Xiaorou’s heart pounded wildly—was Jing Nuo serious this time? Were they truly going to have a baby? Were they finally solidifying their status as husband and wife today? Her face flushed a deeper red at the thought. The moment had truly arrived, and she felt a little shy.
“Eat less next time—then I’ll be able to carry you,” Jing Nuo teased, noticing how much weight Wen Xiaorou had gained since moving into his family.
Her cheeks burned even hotter. Why say such a mood-killing thing when she had been building up her feelings? His words instantly cut her passion in half.
“You’re not thinking about anything you shouldn’t be, are you?” Jing Nuo said, deliberately teasing as he looked at her flushed face.
“Not at all,” Wen Xiaorou denied immediately.
“Not? Then why are you blushing?” Jing Nuo pressed his body down slightly, intensifying the intimate atmosphere in the room.
“No,” Wen Xiaorou denied again, pushing him away lightly to prove her innocence, turning her head to avoid his gaze. She feared losing control and making the first move, which would surely make Jing Nuo laugh uproariously.
“Xiaorou, do you want our child to look like you, or like me?” Jing Nuo teased mischievously, enjoying her shyness.
“You’re smart, and you’re handsome,” Wen Xiaorou said sincerely, fully acknowledging Jing Nuo’s virtues. As for their child, she wished the baby resembled Jing Nuo more. Though she was also pretty, she hoped their child would inherit Jing Nuo’s looks.
