Chapter 31: “Woman”

“I…”

Chen Ping had never imagined that Luo Man would come to the company in person to look for him.

“Chen Ping, you two talk.”

Wu Yu, who was standing nearby, was equally stunned. But as a clever manager, she asked no questions. After giving them a brief instruction, she left.

“Luo Man, what brings you here?”

“Am I not allowed to come?”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“Won’t you invite me in to sit down?”

“Uh… yes, of course. Please come in.”

It was all rather unexpected.

But when Chen Ping saw the person beside Luo Man, his surprise deepened.

“Mei… Mei… Anita Mui!”

“I thought you didn’t recognize me.”

“Of course I do. How could I not?”

Though he was inwardly shocked, Chen Ping knew that this parallel world was different from the one he had known in his previous life.

In his former life, he had always felt that Anita Mui’s fate was a great tragedy. To see her again now was an indescribably strange and wonderful experience.

“Sister Mei, you’re my idol! I absolutely love your songs and your movies.”

The moment he saw Anita Mui, Chen Ping turned into an excited young fan.

Luo Man, seated to one side, cleared her throat several times.

“What are you doing?”

“Uh, I just got a little excited seeing Sister Mei.”

Realizing that he had lost his composure, Chen Ping spoke sheepishly.

“So seeing me doesn’t excite you?”

“Well… it does, just not in the same way.”

Chen Ping could only smile helplessly.

After all, he had never known Luo Man in his previous life, so naturally he had no reason to feel that same rush of excitement.

But Anita Mui was different.

What did it feel like to see Anita Mui again in this world?

It was like a book lover witnessing the resurrection of two legendary authors. The joy was overwhelming.

How could Chen Ping not be excited?

“Hehe, Luo Man, your little brother is adorable.”

Seeing how much Chen Ping admired her, Anita Mui smiled warmly.

“I like the way you call me Sister Mei.”

Luo Man snorted.

“Don’t even think about taking advantage of my little brother.”

“All right, all right, I won’t. But about those lyrics…”

As she spoke, Anita Mui looked toward Chen Ping again.

“Chen Ping, I brought you a business opportunity.”

As she spoke, Luo Man took out a piece of sheet music and handed it to Chen Ping.

She had been joking earlier, but now that they were discussing business, she addressed him formally by name.

“This song?”

Chen Ping looked it over, then cautiously asked, as he had before, “Has anyone else tried writing lyrics for it?”

“Yes, but I wasn’t satisfied with them.”

Anita Mui took out the lyrics that had been written previously.

“Let me see.”

Chen Ping read them, then nodded.

“Sister Mei, your voice is rich and deep, while the melody is both beautiful and sorrowful. The previous lyrics don’t quite capture that mood. Why don’t we call the song ‘Woman’?”

“Woman?”

The moment she heard the title, Anita Mui froze. Then she blurted out, “That’s a wonderful name.”

“Woman. I like it.”

As she spoke, Anita Mui glanced at Luo Man.

“Luo Man, I’m becoming more and more interested in your little brother.”

“I told you, don’t even think about taking advantage of him. He’s still very innocent.”

Luo Man raised an eyebrow and looked at Chen Ping.

Chen Ping burst out laughing.

How could he fail to understand what she meant?

Innocent, indeed.

She was obviously talking about something else.

He had already thought that this celebrated actress had a rather dirty sense of humor. He had not expected her to be quite so shameless.

“I’ll think about the lyrics.”

Ignoring Luo Man, Chen Ping pretended to consider how he should write the rest of the song.

Of course, he was not thinking about anything.

He was copying it outright.

No, that was not the right way to put it. How could the work of a man of culture be called copying? He was merely contributing to the development of this world’s entertainment industry.

It took Chen Ping only a little over ten minutes to finish the lyrics.

“I’m done.”

“That fast?”

“I was simply inspired.”

“Let me see.”

Luo Man snatched the lyrics away at once.

“I have a flower, planted deep within my heart,
A tender bud awaiting bloom, shrouded in quiet longing.
From dawn to dusk, I wait with all my heart,
For someone who will enter my dreams.

Woman, swaying amid the mortal world,
Woman, gently moving with the wind…”

Luo Man had read only half the lyrics when she rose to her feet.

“Chen Ping, I’ll transfer a hundred thousand to your account later. I’m leaving.”

With that, she made for the door.

Anita Mui was quick enough to seize Luo Man by the arm.

“Wait! I haven’t finished reading the lyrics.”

“What’s there to read? They were written for me.”

“Who said they were written for you? They were clearly written for me. Hand them over.”

“No.”

“If you don’t give them to me, I’ll have to use my ultimate move.”

Anita Mui raised both hands and made a playful grabbing motion.

Luo Man looked ready to faint.

“All right, all right, take them. But you owe me a favor.”

“What…”

Watching the scene unfold, Chen Ping was utterly dumbfounded.

Were these really the legendary queens of the entertainment world?

Perhaps seeing his stunned expression, the two powerhouses finally composed themselves.

After reading the lyrics Chen Ping had written, Anita Mui slapped the table.

“Chen Ping, these lyrics are absolutely wonderful. They feel as though they were written specifically for me. I want them.”

“The melody is excellent to begin with. Combined with the lyrics, it creates a beautiful atmosphere.”

“Regardless, I still have to thank you. I love these lyrics. Come, let’s exchange contact information. I’ll transfer the money to you later.”

“Why bother? If you want to find Chen Ping in the future, just come to me.”

Luo Man moved as if to stop them, but Anita Mui lightly slapped the back of her right hand.

“Come on, don’t mind her. I may need to ask you to write lyrics for me again someday.”

…

“Wu Yu, how are things on your end?”

“I’m still outside. I don’t know yet why they came to see Chen Ping.”

“What exactly is the relationship between Chen Ping and Luo Man?”

“I don’t know either.”

Wu Yu hesitated for a moment before adding, “But I think I heard Luo Man call Chen Ping her little brother.”

“Little brother?”

“Yes.”

“You’re sure you didn’t mishear?”

“I’m sure.”

“How could that be? One of them is surnamed Luo, and the other is surnamed Chen. Could it be…”

Wang Jin was astonished.

Before he knew it, a thought had entered his mind.

Such things were common in the entertainment industry.

Yet once the thought arose, Wang Jin shook his head.

Chen Ping’s appearance was far too ordinary.

Then again, what was the truth?

What exactly was the relationship between Chen Ping and Luo Man?

And what about Kai-Ko Chen from earlier? What was going on there?

Wang Jin had previously wanted to pressure Chen Ping into signing a different contract.

But now it seemed that changing it was not merely impossible for the time being. It would probably remain impossible in the future as well.

Unable to see through Chen Ping at all, Wang Jin instructed him, “Stay at the artists’ residence for now. If you hear anything, call me immediately.”

“Yes.”

Wu Yu nodded.

Even without Wang Jin’s instructions, she was intensely curious about Chen Ping.

Wasn’t he just an extra before?

How had he managed to earn Kai-Ko Chen’s recommendation?

And why did two celebrated actresses appear to have such an unusual relationship with him?

As for President Jiang, why had he shown such concern for a newcomer?
