Chapter 3: Two Big Shots

In Bright City, Lu Shangjin did not pick up Gu Mang and Gu Si until nightfall.

“Gu Mang, Gu Si, you’ve finally arrived!”

Lu Shangjin was so excited his hands were shaking. He nearly could not stop himself from bowing and scraping as he went to help this formidable guest.

Gu Mang wore her baseball cap pulled low, both hands stuffed into the pockets of her black jacket, looking utterly unbothered as she said coolly, “You’re too kind, Uncle Lu.”

“No, no, no, I still need to be polite about this. That matter of mine is a tricky one, so I’m counting on you.”

Gu Mang gave him a slight nod and hummed in acknowledgment.

Lu Shangjin personally opened the car door for her, leaving his subordinates staring in disbelief.

Who exactly was this young lady, that Director Lu would treat her like this?

She did not even look old enough to be an adult.

Could she really handle something that stumped their director?

...

Lu Shangjin lived in a garden villa in the city center. The iron gate was tall and heavy, with an imposing air of authority.

A servant opened the door.

“We’re here.” Lu Shangjin again opened the car door himself and led them inside.

Gu Si carried a huge black backpack that looked completely out of proportion to his small frame, following behind Gu Mang, who strolled along lazily while playing games on her phone.

He looked like a pitiful little thing being abused.

Lu Shangjin could not bear to watch. “Gu Si, that bag... should I carry it for you?”

Gu Si waved him off and said proudly, “No need. Helping my sister carry things is my honor!”

Lu Shangjin glanced at Gu Mang, who did not even look back, and the corner of his mouth twitched.

Gu Si tugged at the oversized backpack straps and hurried after Gu Mang with a puffing gait.

In the living room, Lu Shangjin’s wife, Lin Zhou, was seated on the sofa. Seeing the group arrive, she rose to greet them.

“You’re back.” Lin Zhou helped Lu Shangjin take off his overcoat, then addressed Gu Mang with a somewhat stiff expression: “Miss Gu.”

Gu Mang had just finished her game. She lifted her eyes from the phone screen, curved her lips, and politely said, “Mrs. Lu.”

Those features were clearly exquisite, yet on closer look they carried a trace of roguishness.

The faint curve of her beautiful mouth seemed to hold a touch of cold cruelty, lingering there, half-hidden.

Lin Zhou had already investigated Gu Mang’s background.

A senior in high school who fought, got into brawls, and treated skipping class like a daily routine.

The only thing she had going for her was a face strikingly, almost offensively, beautiful.

She did not know how her husband had come to know someone like this!

And even let such a person live in their home!

What if she led her Lu Yi and Lu Yang astray?

Lu Shangjin failed to notice the displeasure in Lin Zhou’s eyes. Rolling up his sleeves, he said, “Gu Mang, it’s too late tonight. You and Gu Si should rest first. We’ll talk tomorrow.”

Gu Mang put away her phone and replied lazily with a hum.

...

The guest room on the third floor was spacious.

It was obvious that everything had been prepared with great care, down to the last detail.

Gu Si was still young.

So Lu Shangjin had two beds set up in the room.

It was more convenient for the siblings to look after each other.

He personally escorted the two of them upstairs and stood to the side, saying, “If you need anything, just tell me directly. Don’t be polite.”

Gu Mang leaned against the edge of the desk, arms folded, and asked languidly, “When will Gu Si’s matter be arranged?”

“Huh? What matter of mine?” Gu Si looked up in confusion.

Lu Shangjin patted the boy’s curly hair and said, “He’s too young. The procedures are a bit troublesome. Wait two more days, and it should be fine.”

Since no one was telling him, Gu Si could not be bothered to ask further.

He sat down on the bed, crossed one leg over the other, and started playing on his phone, his little hands moving furiously fast.

Gu Mang nodded. “Fine. Once you’ve arranged it, come talk to me about your matter.”

Lu Shangjin clicked his tongue. “Hey, Gu Mang, you’re being too formal. Are you still afraid your Uncle Lu would trick you?”

Gu Mang turned her face away expressionlessly, took a computer out of her backpack, and set it on the desk.

She pulled out a chair and sat down in the unmistakable posture of a big shot, one leg crossed over the other.

Gu Si was probably learning from her.

Arrogant to the extreme.
