Chapter 13: Utterly Arrogant

Lu Shangjin greeted him. “Chengzhou.”

As he spoke, he opened the car door.

Gu Mang lowered her eyes and slipped into the vehicle.

Lu Shangjin walked around to the other side. After closing the door, he asked, “How is Grandma?”

Lu Yi finally recovered from his astonishment at seeing their Sixth Master personally open the door for Gu Mang and started the car mechanically.

Lu Chengzhou said, “The military doctor is treating her. Her condition isn’t very good.”

As he spoke, his eyes remained fixed on Gu Mang.

The girl sat lazily in the back seat, playing on her phone with her body slouched at an awkward angle, clearly making herself as comfortable as possible.

She did exactly as she pleased.

Yet her icy aura alone was enough to keep anyone from making careless remarks.

Was the doctor Sixth Uncle had mentioned her?

Upon hearing that the old lady’s condition was critical, the usually composed Lu Shangjin could not suppress his anxiety. “I heard a few days ago that she was improving. How did her condition suddenly deteriorate?”

Lu Chengzhou uttered three words through his thin lips. “I don’t know.”

His gaze fell upon the vivid red hair tie around Gu Mang’s wrist, and his brows lifted slightly.

Someone who dressed in black from head to toe had chosen to wear a small red hair tie, which set off the porcelain-white delicacy of her wrist.

Gu Mang could sense him watching her without even looking up.

His gaze was so sharp that it was impossible to ignore.

She did not so much as move her eyelids. Instead, she shifted into a more comfortable position and continued playing her game as though nothing had happened.

Arrogance radiated from every inch of her.

She was utterly contemptuous of everyone around her.

…

The car stopped in front of the Lu residence.

Lu Shangjin said, “Chengzhou, take Gu Mang inside. I’ll wait for her out here.”

Lu Chengzhou slipped one hand into his pocket, his eyes narrowing slightly. “Come in with us. Grandma would also like to see her Sixth Uncle.”

Lu Shangjin hesitated for several seconds before nodding.

The Lu family had a deep-rooted heritage. Their ancestral residence was an exquisite classical garden, unique in its design.

The courtyard was arranged with graceful irregularity, its white walls and dark-tiled roofs framed by floors paved entirely with pale marble.

At that moment, the old lady’s courtyard was as bright as day and filled with people.

They were all members of the Lu family, both direct and collateral relatives.

The moment Lu Shangjin appeared in the old lady’s courtyard, the atmosphere changed.

Countless gazes turned toward him, wary and guarded.

With the old lady on the brink of death, the Lu family stood on the verge of falling apart.

There was an enormous fortune at stake. The more people involved, the smaller everyone’s share would become.

With both hands tucked into her coat pockets, Gu Mang watched the scene with detached indifference.

Nearly all the most influential figures in the capital’s military, political, and business circles were gathered here.

Tsk. The Lu family of the capital.

Lu Chengzhou glanced at Gu Mang from the corner of his eye.

The girl looked languid and unconcerned, walking with such unrestrained swagger that she seemed to recognize no one beneath the heavens.

A thin, cold mist lingered in her eyes. They were as still as a frigid pool, dark and fathomless, carrying a trace of wild, wicked arrogance.

He did not believe Gu Mang failed to recognize these people.

They were prominent figures who appeared in the news every other day, yet she remained perfectly composed.

His brows rose slightly before he withdrew his gaze from her.

Without paying anyone the slightest attention, he walked straight into the house.

Lu Shangjin exchanged brief nods of greeting with the others.

Just then, a woman suddenly stepped in front of them.
