Chapter 58: The First Realm of Urban Legends
Chapter 58: The First Urban Legend Site
During the afternoon classes, Duan Ming stopped listening almost right after it began; it was far too childish.
Sharing the same sentiment were He Nian and Zeng Yanliang.
They simply couldn't understand the lectures.
For the entire afternoon, the three of them along with Liang Zhichao immersed themselves entirely in simulated exam scenarios, researching cheating methods.
They got caught six times.
Fortunately, the afternoon teacher wasn't as meticulous as the drowned ghost teacher, and merely chased them out of the classroom each time.
Having finally endured through class time, night arrived. Because they had accepted a student council mission, they were excused from evening self-study and headed straight for the experimental building of Fengxian High School.
Night in the nether realm fell quickly. After a hurried meal, the sky had already turned murky gray, and by the time they reached their destination, it was pitch black.
Jiang Xiaoxiao had been waiting by the grand entrance of the experimental building for a long time.
She nodded at Duan Ming without any unnecessary chatter.
"Is everyone here? Follow me."
She turned and walked away.
Because of the urban legend regarding the heartless phantom, hardly anyone frequented the experimental building during the day. At night, it grew chillingly silent.
The lights in the hallway were not too dim, yet far from bright. This hazy, murky ambiance seemed to drape a thin veil over the hearts of the four, making them feel uneasy.
The legend laboratory was on the sixth floor. Jiang Xiaoxiao led the way while explaining.
"The task this time is actually quite simple. That laboratory has been running a long-term experiment. Once initial preparations are done, no human operation is needed until the experiment concludes, but someone needs to record the experimental data at regular intervals. The whole process takes about three hours.
"Normally, I award 5 credits for this. Compared to ordinary tasks, this is a huge return, but almost no one ever takes it on. Only when the credit reward is raised will a few individuals take the risk. After all, although that heartless fellow might not necessarily show up within these three hours, once it does—well, let's put it this way: out of 82 participants so far, only 45 have returned."
At this point, Duan Ming suddenly asked, "Has the school administration never considered getting rid of these urban legends? The dean's strength alone should be more than enough."
Earlier in the administrative office, he had already probed the dean—he was at the evil level, which was more than sufficient to deal with a rule-type fierce ghost.
Jiang Xiaoxiao shook her head. "It's not that they don't want to, but that they can't."
"For some unknown reason, anyone at the fierce ghost level or above cannot approach any of the urban legend sites."
There was such a thing?
Duan Ming furrowed his brow tightly.
There was likely something much deeper hidden beneath this.
Just then, Jiang Xiaoxiao in front suddenly stopped, colliding straight into the deep-in-thought Duan Ming.
Her face flushed slightly as she pointed to the side.
"We're here."
"Oh."
Duan Ming glanced down with lingering interest before walking in openly and confidently.
They were here precisely to cause trouble for that heartless human specimen anyway; what was there to be afraid of?
The laboratory was extremely clean and tidy. In the very center stood a scaffolding of various instruments, with pitch-black liquid constantly churning within them.
No abnormalities were visible for the moment.
They might as well calmly complete the credit task first.
"What do we need to do?" he asked, turning back.
Jiang Xiaoxiao pointed to another set of equipment not far away. "Over there. Split the work among yourselves, each take one to collect a liquid sample, place it on the instrument over there, and then there's nothing else to do. Just wait."
Duan Ming nodded, walking over first to start distributing the apparatus.
He picked one up and handed it to He Nian.
"Here you go, big beaker."
He Nian: "???"
"Even though it sounds correct, I somehow feel offended."
"We're doing a mission! Can you not be such a fragile snowflake? Let me phrase it differently then."
"Big beaker, hold this!"
He Nian: "!!!’"
"I finally understand where the problem lies. Can you please stop butchering your phrasing!"
"Too lazy to deal with you."
Duan Ming rolled his eyes with a huff and continued distributing instruments to the others.
The process went smoothly. By the time the data instruments started operating normally, only twenty minutes had passed.
Then the group began staring at each other in blank dismay.
Jiang Xiaoxiao and the Qiu Yu duo naturally hoped time would pass quickly so they could leave the legend laboratory, but Duan Ming and his friends were different. Barely had they sat down when they started rummaging around the laboratory.
Cabinets, behind doors, under desks—completely fruitless, not even a ghost shadow was in sight, until He Nian started staring intently at the bubbling liquid inside the apparatus.
Duan Ming: "What are you doing?"
He Nian looked dead serious: "This black liquid is a bit weird. Do you think there's a chance the phantom is hiding right inside this experimental dish, waiting for us to drop our guard so it can suddenly jump out and scare us?"
"You really have an imagination," Duan Ming scoffed disdainfully. "My nether realm theory class might not be stellar, but my other cultural subjects are top-notch. This is obviously a Wozijibande effect experiment, through..."
"Alright, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop. Don't talk about those things."
"Damn it, my head is itching, I feel like I'm growing a brain."
Watching the two clowns acting up, Qiu Yu and Ji Xian, who had huddled in the corner early on, began whispering to each other.
Ji Xian: "What's wrong with Boss Qiu Yu? Why do I feel like they actually really want to run into that urban legend phantom?"
Qiu Yu: "Don't even mention you, I have that feeling too. Are these guys crazy? Isn't it better to safely wait three hours, get the credits, and slip away early? What if they really mess around and draw that thing here? I'm starting to regret cooperating with these brain-damaged people."
Ji Xian composed himself and cast a sideways glance. "It's fine, we're close to the door. A moment from now, if anything feels slightly off, we'll just..."
His words abruptly cut off.
Not just Ji Xian, but Qiu Yu as well was currently staring with wide eyes, looking as though he had seen a ghost.
Just then, both of them simultaneously felt a gentle breeze brush against their backs, as if someone was blowing air onto the back of their necks.
Yet there was a wall right behind them!
Such a supernatural change naturally couldn't be hidden from the trio still rummaging around, nor from Jiang Xiaoxiao, who remained constantly on guard.
In their line of sight, an ashen-white face emerged from the wall behind Qiu Yu and Ji Xian, looking as though it were embedded directly into the plaster.
"Careful!"
Jiang Xiaoxiao lowered her gaze and lunged to block Duan Ming, only to find herself pulled backward by him instead.
"What are you doing! Absolutely do not look into its eyes!"
Duan Ming flashed a wicked smile. "Been looking for you for a long time. Since you came out yourself, things will be much easier."
"You just shouldn't make eye contact, right? Heh, then I'll just make sure it doesn't look at me!"
He and He Nian simultaneously put on a pair of sunglasses.
Zeng Yanliang, standing nearby, widened his eyes, as if guessing what was coming.
Hey, hey, hey! I'm only mute, not blind!
"Ah—"
Sure enough, the enlightened folding stool made another dazzling appearance.
The effect was also outstanding; the face embedded in the wall instantly began clutching its face and screaming, the entire ghost tumbling out from the wall. Right in the region of its heart was a bloody, gaping hole.
Qiu Yu and Ji Xian, facing it head-on, suffered the worst—tears streamed down their faces on the spot.
Duan Ming: "Hehe, touched, aren't you? Why aren't you coming over yet!"
Touched your mom! Damn it, I'm definitely going to see an optometrist once I get out of here!
