Chapter 33: Chen Yongren, the Treasure-Hunting Ghost

Though the cafeteria looked plain and unassuming from the outside, the Big Boss’s office was decorated with extraordinary extravagance. There was an exquisite carpet, a chandelier that looked worth a fortune, and an enormous bookcase behind the desk, crammed with all sorts of books for show.

Duan Ming spent a long while searching. He examined the documents on the desk and went through every drawer, but found nothing useful beyond learning that the Big Boss was named Sun Dapang.

To be honest, Little Ghost A’s information had shaken him considerably.

The entire inpatient building had been wiped out in a single ghost-spirit invasion, and the cafeteria that had been brought in along with it surely contained extremely important information.

After searching for so long without finding anything, Duan Ming began to grow restless.

Then he noticed Little Ghost A seriously tapping and pressing at different parts of the bookcase.

“What are you doing?”

Little Ghost A continued tapping as he replied, “Officer, you may not know this, but although this is my first time inside the Big Boss’s office, when I was alive, I saw him bring all kinds of flashy women back here more than once. Trust me—there’s definitely a secret door.”

Duan Ming could not help laughing as he scolded him. “You’ve watched too many television dramas, haven’t you? What, you think pressing one of the books will open some kind of—”

“???”

“!!!”

Click, click, click—

The words caught in Duan Ming’s throat. He watched, wide-eyed, as Little Ghost A really pressed a copy of The Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor, and a door opened in the wall beside it.

“Hey, Officer, what are you standing there for? Come on in.”

Little Ghost A rushed inside excitedly.

“Holy shit!”

The sudden cry brought Duan Ming back to his senses, and he hurried in after him.

The next second—

“Holy shit!”

Man and ghost stood there dumbfounded, their expressions and poses identical.

Although this was merely a hidden room, it was no smaller than the office outside. The entire room was decorated in a lurid crimson hue. In the very center stood an enormous round bed. Beside it was a slightly smaller waterbed, and beyond that, an oddly shaped chair, as well as a small stage with a metal pole standing in the middle.

Against the wall was a large cabinet, its seven or eight shelves filled with all manner of famous, familiar novelty toys. Some of them Duan Ming had never even seen before, let alone knew the names of.

Gurgle—times two.

This guy must have really known how to enjoy himself when he was alive.

After his initial shock, however, Duan Ming cast aside his wild thoughts and began searching the room thoroughly.

If there was a secret hidden in the cafeteria, then this concealed room was undoubtedly the most suspicious place.

He had already formed a theory when he obtained the hairpin that caused disfigurement.

According to Han Lingling’s deduction, the head nurse was behind the strange events in the inpatient building. The disfiguring hairpin had been stolen from the head nurse’s office, while the head nurse herself had her head wrapped in bandages, looking like someone who could not bear to show her face.

Everything connected.

The person disfigured by the hairpin was very likely the head nurse.

But why had she been disfigured? And by whom?

For the moment, there was no way to know.

More information was needed.

Given the circumstances, what role had the lecher Sun Dapang played in all this? Had he attacked the head nurse, causing the chain of events that followed?

Duan Ming was sure he would find the answer in this hidden room.

He entered full of confidence, but ten minutes later, his face had fallen.

“That makes no sense. Everything here is perfectly normal. This is just a simple sex room.”

He began to feel irritated again.

Then a crisp sound broke the silence.

Click.

Duan Ming turned toward the noise.

“???”

“!!!”

Little Ghost A was crouching in a corner, slowly opening a concealed compartment in the wall.

Who could have imagined that a wall which appeared completely seamless would contain another door?

“Are you a rat or something? You can burrow into anything!”

Little Ghost A scratched his head and answered sheepishly, “Hehe, Officer, I’ve always been especially sensitive to this kind of thing. When I was little, no matter where my dad hid his discs, I could always find them.”

Duan Ming: “…”

“Impressive. Good work.”

As he spoke, Duan Ming stepped forward and looked inside.

Behind the door was not another room, but a large, beautifully crafted glass cabinet. It had ten levels, each one holding a framed photograph at twenty-centimeter intervals. The contents of the photographs were horrifying.

Every photograph showed a fat man sprawled naked over a young woman. Some of the women were conscious and responding eagerly; others had their eyes closed, completely unaware.

At a rough count, there were at least seventy or eighty different photographs in the cabinet. Behind each one sat a disc, tilted at an angle.

“He’s a monster,” Little Ghost A snarled through clenched teeth.

Most of the women in the photographs were unconscious, suggesting that these young women had been drugged through vile means before being abused.

Then Duan Ming noticed that the compartment at the bottom right was completely different from the others.

Every other section had a photograph in front and a disc behind it. This one had neither. In place of the photograph was an identification card.

He picked it up.

In an instant—

[Hidden quest triggered: Guilt Beyond Redemption (3/5)]

[Why? Why did no one help me? I want everyone to be buried with me!!!]

Duan Ming’s entire body shuddered.

It was only a few brief lines, yet he felt as though someone were screaming beside his ear, hysterical and consumed by despair.

Was this identification card the information related to the third hidden quest?

After shaking his head, he finally looked down at the card in his hand.

It was a nurse’s identification badge.

A head-and-shoulders photograph showed a remarkably beautiful woman, a faint smile resting at the corners of her lips and lending her an air of warmth and approachability.

Name: He Yuwei.

“He Yuwei? Is this the head nurse’s name?”

Duan Ming murmured, though his tone was filled with certainty.

Come on. He had seen the head nurse’s magnificent figure before.

And Duan Ming, eighteen years old and having watched a few adult films, had at least mastered the basic skill of identifying people by their breasts.

He stroked his chin. “So Sun Dapang used despicable methods to get the head nurse. Then, consumed by resentment, she killed herself before invading reality to seek revenge?”

But he still felt that things could not be so simple.

At first glance, everything seemed to fit together logically. Yet on closer inspection, there were still countless unanswered questions.

Sun Dapang was the only one who had committed evil, so why vent her hatred on the entire inpatient building and everyone in the cafeteria as well?

Why had the disfigurement been listed as a separate clue, and what role did it play in the whole affair?

And most importantly—

The name of this hidden quest was Guilt Beyond Redemption, which did not fit his deduction at all.

After searching for a while longer and confirming that there were no new clues, Duan Ming had no choice but to give up.

Before leaving, he took out one hundred million ghost coins and tossed them to Little Ghost A.

“I’ll turn over your stolen money to the authorities. This hundred million is from me personally. Thank you for cooperating today. You did well.”

To be honest, Duan Ming greatly admired Little Ghost A’s talent for treasure hunting. If possible, increasing his friendliness rating would be well worth it. Since the other party was greedy for money, there was no need to investigate further—money was the surest solution.

Sure enough—

[Chen Yongren’s friendliness +20]

[Chen Yongren’s friendliness: 50] (Deeply admiring)

???

Hold on. Had this guy started with thirty friendliness points?

Could it be because of the police cap?

Whatever the reason, it was excellent news for him.

The one hundred million ghost coins had pushed the rating right up to the point where the other party nearly wept with gratitude.

Duan Ming contentedly touched the brim of his cap.

“Ah Ren, if the police ever need your help in the future, cooperate with us a little more.”

What? The officer knows my name! Has he really been investigating us for a long time?

Chen Yongren was both awestruck and terrified. He brought his feet together and gave another comical salute.

“Yes, sir!!!”
